Son, nephew, child Killed by Jose Lopez

Jose Lopez, an illegal alien living in California was arrested and convicted of felony hit and run in the death of nine-year-old Ryan Jeffrey Scholz. Ryan was killed on January 9, 1988, just a few weeks before his 10th birthday.

Ryan was a passenger on his father motorcycle when Lopez's vehicle crossed over the double yellow lines and hit the Scholz's motorcycle. The crash impact threw Ryan off the motorcycle, into the car windshield, and then his body fell onto the ground. Ryan's neck was broken and he later died from his injuries. Ryan's father was seriously injured too and lost a leg as a result of the crash.

Instead of offering aid to the crash victims, Lopez fled the scene of the accident on foot, walking home.

OJJPAC Note: Fleeing the scene on an accident is routine for the vast majority of illegal aliens. They will let victims lie dying in the road.

It was later discovered that Lopez had been drinking and driving.

Lopez's punishment for killing a 9-year-old boy and maiming his father was just 6 months in jail. Ryan's mother was so distraught over her son's death and Lopez's light sentence, that she took her own life on the day of Lopez's sentencing.

The Scholz, Buchanan, and Urban families continue to pay the ultimate cost of the loss of two of their family members because the federal government has failed to adequately enforce existing immigration laws.

A family member described Ryan as a good boy who was smart, well-liked, and loved to play baseball. After his death, his baseball jersey and number was retired by his major little league team.

It is unknown if Lopez was deported after he completed his sentence.

Ryan's story demonstrates that the problem of inadequate immigration law enforcement has existed for at least 20 years, and sentences of less than 1 year have also been going on (at least in some cases) for over 20 years. This case also shows the serious lifelong impact these preventable crimes have on the families of American victims.

Isn't it time that the federal government protect American citizens rather than those who violate our laws and put our citizens' safety at risk?
