Illegal immigrant charged in crash that killed young mother

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC-TV) - A young mother was killed Tuesday night in an accident involving an intoxicated woman who is in the country illegally.

23-year-old Latoya Richardson died at the scene of the crash at Rhodes and Cherry Road.

Angela Alvarado, 27, slammed into the driver's side of Richardson's Chevy Cavalier. She's charged with DUI, vehicular homicide, running a red light, having no driver's license and leaving the scene of an accident.

Neighbor Rachel Stoner says she saw Alvarado exit her Chevy Lumina and leave the scene. "She just like looked at the lady in the car, then took off walking."

Stoner said police caught up with Alvarado about two blocks from the site of the crash.

"I don't understand how you could just look at somebody who is dead and just walk away," Stoner said.

Willie Richardson says he's struggling with how to break the news of his daughter's death to her eight-year-old son.

"I feel like I'm in a dream, like I haven't woke up," he said.

Latoya Richardson's father says she was a graduate of Sheffield High School who worked at a local nursing home.

Immigration officials have put a hold on Angela Alvarado as she faces the numerous charges related to the crash.
