For all we know Trump encouraged Arpaio to enter that race. We should all watch Arpaio very closely for the coming year and see if he gets any new jobs, appointments, or other rewards from the direction of the DC powers that be.

In the past, vote spoilers in AZ were heavily rewarded after their service to the machine.

Perhaps, Arpaio already got his reward with the pardon.
