The NC Senate Commerce Committee passed SB 32 "Employers Must Use Federal E-Verify Program" on Tuesday by a wide margin sending the bill to the Appropriations Committee for its next hurdle.

"The chances are looking stronger that this bill is going to a full Senate vote!" said William Gheen. "We expect the bill to pass if we can stop opponents from derailing it with procedural maneuvers in committee because lawmakers know a majority of citizens support this."

On Tuesday, William Gheen of ALIPAC and Ron Woodard of NC Listen spoke out in favor of the bill during the hearing.

Bill Rowe of the NC Justice Center and Jessica Hayes of the NC Home Builders Association spoke out against the bill.

Opponents of the bill tried to create confusion among lawmakers by citing a study from the Intel corporation citing a low 87 percent accuracy rate for the E-Verify program. The official Department of Homeland Security documentation indicates that E-Verify is over 99 percent accurate. North Carolina state government has been using the program for two years without serious complaint.

Committee Chairman, Senator R.C. Soles, and bill sponsor John Snow both mentioned that they were receiving many calls and e-mails in support of SB 32.

Talk radio shows across North Carolina are beginning plans to discuss this new legislation that would stop illegal aliens from being hired in the state.

"Our goal now is to get SB 32 to the Senate floor and the governor's desk as soon as possible," said William Gheen. "North Carolinians are suffering terribly and this bill could open up new jobs for them as soon as word of passage of this bill reaches the streets."

William Gheen will be back at the North Carolina assembly today distributing copies of a January 8, 2009 US Citizenship and Immigration Services hand out to clear up any confusion about the high accuracy level of the E-Verify system.
