[Watch] Trey Gowdy Responds to Whiny Democrat Congressman Who Wants a Pay Raise

Posted on 4 April, 2014 by Rick Wells

In response to a claim made by Democrat Rep Jim Moran of Virginia, Rep Trey Gowdy says he knows a lot of people in the world who are underpaid; in fact, he says he lives with one who is a school teacher.

Congressman Moran had publicly stated on April 3rd, “I think that the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid. A lot of members can’t even afford to live decently when they are at their job in Washington.” Congressmen are paid $174,000 per year, or roughly $477 per day, plus a premium health care plan and exemption from obamacare.

Gowdy’s response is that “members of Congress are incredibly blessed and fortunate to have the jobs that we have, nobody makes us run. Every two years we offer for public office and if you don’t want to do it then don’t run. But the notion that you can make $174,000 in this country and be under paid is laughable.”

He continues, “We are better off than 99.9% of the people that we claim to work for and I would be embarrassed to say that given our job performance and our salary that we are anything other than grossly overcompensated.”

Greta van Susteren asks what the basis would possibly be for an increase given the poor performance of Congress. Rep Gowdy responds by listing the benefits of working in the capitol, being part of history, and enumerating several non-financial benefits to public service.

His comments should be heard first hand, in the video. It’s clear that he and those he has spoken with don’t share the Virginia Congressman’s opinion.
