During committee testimony this week in Austin, a Texas senator interrupted a Spanish speaker and telling him he should "be speaking in English" during a committee hearing.

Antolin Aguirre of the Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition was testifying against Senate Bill 9 that would help crack down on illegal immigrants in Texas. Aguirre spoke through an interpreter even though he had been in the U.S. since 1988.

Two minutes into Antolin Aguirre’s testimony, Sen. Chris Harris, a Republican from Arlington, interrupted asking Aguirre’s interrupter, "Did I understand him correctly that he has been here since 1988?" Harris asked. "Why aren’t you speaking in English then?"

Through his interpreter, Aguirre said Spanish is his "first language and since it is his first time giving testimony he would rather do it in Spanish."

"It is insulting to us," Sen. Harris fired back. "It is very insulting. And if he knows English, he needs to be speaking in English."

The fiery exchange happened on Monday during a Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committee hearing. Law makers were hearing testimony on the purposed Senate Bill 9 – The so-called sanctuary cities bill. The bill would allow local law enforcement officials to check a suspect’s immigration status.

Supporters of Senate Bill 9 have said it would help crack down on illegal immigrants. Opponents argue that it will do little to help border security and that it’s instead based on racism.

Despite the blow-up The Texas Senate passed the bill Wednesday. It now goes to the House with a vote expected in the next few days

I was there. Wearing bright pink sleeveless shirt in vid. There were many there doubling up for testimony with translators. They were laying out for all to see the problems of domestic violence as something we should consider before passing a bill to bring back law and order...NUTS! There was a machisimo all puffed up insinuating that if the bill was passed it may bring the "immigrants" in collusion with the terrorists. Another waved the demographic superiority before us measley Americans. It was a tough hearing to keep quiet.

Thanks for the report Mayflowerchick, and thank you for standing for citizens by going. It had to be frustrating--I know it would have been hard for me to be quiet in that situation.

Exactly. I have been living in Mexico for 6 years, and I function well on all levels in Spanish.

I agree with the Senator. It was insulting for this man to speak spanish to a room full of Americans.

I believe it was an intentional insult. The man is a Mexican in thought, not an American. All other immigrant groups seek assimilation, but Mexican's have a problem. Who pay homage to a failed State and culture?

I think it's outrageous for this individual to come into an establishment of US Legislation and go to speaking Spanish. I applaud Senator Harris for his actions and voicing his opinion. I just wrote him giving him my support and I'm about to write my Texas House of Representative since the Bill passed the Senate. This just shows how so many people who come here, legally or illegally, refuse to put effort into assimulating properly. If you are here in this country, learn to speak the language. They come here to achieve a better life and use the resources this great country has, yet don't have the drive or respect for this society to learn something on their own.. Take take take...

Bravo! TX State Sen. Chris Harris (R-Arlington) spoke for many Americans when he interrupted the Spanish-language testimony of a citizen of 23 years against the Sanctuary Cities ban (SB9), to say it was "insulting" for the man not to speak English.

This goes right to the heart of everything that is wrong with those who advocate for illegals and La Raza. The seperatism. The sense of entitlement. The contempt for our common language that prior immigrants always hurried to adopt.

God bless you Sen. Harris for speaking for all of us!

I forgot to add...you come to this country for what reason???? You need to learn the language and follow the laws...But what do you expect from intruders, interlopers and law breakers.....they don't want to assimilate only take control for their own purposes...it is about we all stand up say enough is enough....this needs to stop...
