1996 Flashback -- Bill Clinton Talks Like Trump On Immigration: "We Are A Nation Of Laws"

NumbersUSA pulls quotes from Bill Clinton talking illegal immigration and the problem of border control and being a nation of laws from his 1996 State of the Union which shows a striking comparison to what presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has been saying about the subject.

From Clinton's 1996 State of the Union address:

But there are some areas that the federal government should not leave and should address and address strongly. One of these areas is the problem of illegal immigration. After years of neglect, this administration has taken a strong stand to stiffen the protection of our borders. We are increasing border controls by 50 percent. We are increasing inspections to prevent the hiring of illegal immigrants. And tonight, I announce I will sign an executive order to deny federal contracts to businesses that hire illegal immigrants.

Let me be very clear about this: We are still a nation of immigrants; we should be proud of it. We should honor every legal immigrant here, working hard to become a new citizen. But we are also a nation of laws

Watch: Bill Clinton Talks Tough About ‘Illegal Immigrant’ Problem

    "After years of neglect ..."

A new video from the group NumbersUSA features former President Bill Clinton speaking to Congress about illegal immigrants 20 years ago, and compares his tough words to those of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump today. Of course, these days the term “illegal immigrants” is offensive to politically correct minded individuals who insist on a softer label for those who are in the U.S. illegally, such as “aspiring citizens.” But in 1996, Clinton used the term with ease.

In his 1996 State of the Union address, Clinton said, “But there are some areas that the federal government should not leave and should address and address strongly. One of these areas is the problem of illegal immigration. After years of neglect, this administration has taken a strong stand to stiffen the protection of our borders. We are increasing border controls by 50 percent.”

Trump has said we have a porous Southern border and we need to build a solid wall as tough as the wall around Vatican City.

Clinton went on to say, “We are increasing inspections to prevent the hiring of illegal immigrants. And tonight, I announce I will sign an executive order to deny federal contracts to businesses that hire illegal immigrants.”

Trump supports E-Verify, the government system put in place to ensure employers are hiring only those who are legally eligible to work.

Clinton concluded his remarks about immigrants by drawing a distinction between hard-working legal immigrants and illegals. “Let me be very clear about this: We are still a nation of immigrants; we should be proud of it,” he said. “We should honor every legal immigrant here, working hard to be a good citizen, working hard to become a new citizen. But we are also a nation of laws.”

Trump has stated if we have a country, “we have to have laws.”

No, what Trump says is "A nation without borders is not a nation."

Hope he picks up on the second part soon:
