Missouri ACORN Workers Indicted, 35,000 Questionable Forms!

    35,000 Questionable Registration Forms!
Yes, you read that correctly...35,000 questionable registration forms!

Kansas City election officials said this was the most irresponsible and extensive voter registration abuse in Missouri they had seen. They weren't kidding!

KMBC Missouri is reporting this breaking news:

Four people have been indicted on charges of voter fraud in Kansas City, officials said Wednesday.

Investigators said about 35,000 questionable registration forms for new voters were collected by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, a group that works to improve minority and low-income communities.

The four indicted -- Kwaim A. Stenson, Dale D. Franklin, Stephanie L. Davis and Brian Gardner -- were employed by ACORN as registration recruiters.

Here is a report from last week on this growing scandal...

ACORN said it may be just honest mistakes that were made.

KC Buzz Blog reported this earlier tonight:

The U.S. Attorney's office says a federal grand jury handed up indictments this afternoon against four people who, the indictments claim, worked for the community group ACORN to register voters.

The four face two felony counts each: of providing false information to the KC Election board, and of filing a false voter application with the board.

    Each carries a 5 year/$250,000 fine penalty.

ACORN says it's happy the indictments were handed up -- they say they provided the names of three of the four indicted individuals, who, they say, no longer work for ACORN.

Said U.S. attorney Bradley Schlozman, in a statement: "Those who commit fraud in the electoral process dilute the votes of their fellow citizens."

Pubdef offered this update on the indictments:

UPDATE: The four indicted workers are Kwaim A. Stenson, age 19; Stephanie L. Davis (aka Latisha Reed), age 39; Brian Gardner, age 40; and Dale D. Franklin, age 44. Each are charged with two Class D felonies relating to submitting voter registration cards with false names and/or addresses.

There is also an ongoing investigation of ACORN workers in St. Louis that is being conducted by federal investigators.

Sounds like ACORN gets off scott free. Charges need to be brought against ACORN especially since they have a record of this activity.

4 voter registration recruiters indicted on fraud charges
    Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Four people who worked for an advocacy group signing up new voters have been indicted on charges of submitting false voter registrations to the Kansas City election board.

The U.S. attorney's office said Wednesday's indictments name Kwaim A. Stenson, Dale D. Franklin, Brian Gardner and Stephanie L. Davis, who also is known as Latisha Reed.

All four face two felony counts each of "knowingly and willingly" filing false information. The charge carries maximum penalties of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The defendants had been hired as temporary workers by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, known as ACORN. ACORN has been holding voter registration drives focused on low-income and minority residents in parts of Missouri this year.

ACORN officials issued a statement Wednesday night noting that the group had alerted Kansas City elections officials and the Jackson County prosecutor last month after detecting suspicious voter registration applications.

All four defendants have been fired, and ACORN worked with the FBI in the investigation, the group said.

Kansas City's Republican election director, Ray James, said the indictments could help maintain public trust in the election process.

"I hate for anyone to be prosecuted and suffer," James said. "But I've long been concerned about the rights of the general public to a fair election."

James and his Democratic counterpart, Sharon Turner Buie, have said as many as 15,000 recently submitted voter registrations could be "questionable," which they define as duplicates, unreadable applications or containing information that doesn't match other existing records.

Last week the board chairwoman, Melodie Powell, said the board had turned the investigation of the questionable cards over to local and federal authorities.

ACORN has said that some of its applications may have contained honest mistakes.

The Republican election director in St. Louis has criticized ACORN's voter registration process in that city. Its board sent letters to 5,000 voters asking them to re-verify their registrations, an action some critics called illegal.
