Two Chicago shootings on Sunday brought the number of gun-related injuries to 62 over the long Independence Day weekend, but the city’s top cop is confident things are turning around.

“I’m absolutely positive that I enjoy the mayor’s confidence,” Chicago police Superintendent Garry F. McCarthy told reporters Monday morning. “This past week we’ve been disappointed.”
At least a dozen people have been killed in gun-related crimes since Wednesday afternoon. In the latest incident, five people were shot in what was believed to be a landlord-tenant dispute, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Supt. McCarthy, speaking at a press conference in Chicago’s Englewood community, sought to bring context to the violence.
“While to date we’ve had significantly fewer shootings and significantly fewer murders this year, there’s more work to be done, and we won’t rest until everyone in Chicago enjoys the same sense of safety,” he said.
There were 65 shootings last week, down from 76 last year, but Alderman Bob Fioretti told the Chicago Sun-Times that Chicago’s strategy to combat crime is not working.
“Police should have saturated that area for the remainder of this weekend,” he said. “There is a failure to police the street.”
