    Academia Semillas del Pueblo

    JULY 16, 2013

Judicial Watch recently received documents from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) in response to a California Public Records Request filed on May 22, 2012. The request sought records relating to UCLA’s partnership with a failing charter school that has a declared Marxist, Marcos Aguilar, for a principal. Despite its consistent inability to meet minimum standards to continue operating under the auspices of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Academia Semillas del Pueblo (ASP) remained open year after year thanks to pressure on the school board from professors throughout the southwestern United States. According to the documents Judicial Watch obtained, its high school outgrowth – Anahuacalmecac International University Preparatory (AIUP) – appeared before the LAUSD Board of Education to request that its charter be renewed despite inadequate marks on statewide metrics. Highlights from the documents received today:

    • A letter signed by six academics to LAUSD Board of Education President Monica Garcia urging renewal of Semillas’ charter on the basis that: “Our future depends on alternatives to high stakes, unicultural, competitive approaches that currently exist in the LAUSD school bureaucracy.” The academics’ letter, read at the LAUSD Board of Education’s June 18, 2013 meeting, goes on to argue that:

“High stakes testing is not a solution but part of the complex set of problems and issues facing Latino students in the LAUSD school bureaucracy.”

    • A Powerpoint presentation dated June 18, 2013 with introductory remarks intended for the Board of Education in what purports to be the indigenous language “Nahuatl.” Several slides later, the same Powerpoint presentation, designed to win the Board of Education’s renewal approval, defends Anahuacalmecac’s failure to meet statewide standards by quoting State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson as saying, “It’s disappointing that this report applied a one-size-fits-all checklist. Those who are serious about examining the quality . . . will have to look elsewhere for more reliable and useful information.”

    • A glossy prospectus distributed at an open house on January 30, 2013 which concludes with an alternative report card, described as a “reconceptualization of what we seek as the qualitative results of the learner’s experience is a values-based guide for teachers as well as learners. This table is only a linear representation of the matrix of the learning experience, which can occur at any point, over time, in any setting, formal and informal.” The metrics set forth in the “reconceptualiz[ed]” report card include attributes such as “Trustworthy” and “Meticulous” yet misspells another trait: Communal.

The elementary school aspect of the institution has received a total of $314,469.00 in federal funding. To date, LAUSD has failed to release any records responsive to Judicial Watch’s May 22, 2013 records request.

Mexican Separatist School Pushes Marxism, Anti-Americanism

    NOVEMBER 16, 2006

A school in Los Angeles, California, is using taxpayer money to push a radical separatist agenda to its students, according to evidence obtained by Judicial Watch through the California Public Records Act. Academia Semillas del Pueblo (Seeds of the People Academy) was ostensibly established to provide an alternative to traditional schools and better education options for Latinos. Behind the faacade, statements by the school’s president, Mexican radical Marcos Aguilar, prove that the school’s purpose is far more threatening.

Aguilar was a student radical at UCLA in the early 1990s, when he joined the reconquista-focused student group M.E.Ch.A, which features the slogan “Por La Raza todo, Fuera de La Raza nada,” or, “For the Race, everything, for those outside the Race, nothing.” He was involved in destroying a teacher’s lounge at UCLA in 1993 as part of a protest to force the University to create a Chicano Studies department.

Aguilar’s radical, racist bent has continued into his role as principal of Academia Semillas del Pueblo. The school’s charter emphasizes Mexican culture, collective governance, and anti-Americanism as its three main focal points in the education of students. Mexican culture is promoted to the exclusion of American ideals; instruction in the English language does not begin until the fourth grade. The end result of these policies: the lowest rank possible on the State Department of Education’s “Academic Performance Index”.

Academia Semillas del Pueblo, a combination of anti-American, separatist ideology and clear academic failings, is being paid for by American taxpayers in the amount of $1.6 million for fiscal year 2004-2005. The school also received a $50,000 grant and a $200,000 line of credit from reconquista organization the National Council of La Raza. According to Professor Clynn Custred of California State University, quoted in an Investor’s Business Daily article, “There is a racial aspect to this. They have no intention of assimilating – It’s just amazing to me that the rest of the country hasn’t caught on to it.”

Fortunately, the school’s charter is up for review by the Los Angeles Unified School District this fall; let’s hope that the school’s blatantly anti-American curriculum and abysmal academic performance will convince district administrators to revoke it and stop the waste of taxpayer money.

'The Race' schools: Your tax dollars at work

    Michelle Malkin | Jul 12, 2006

Top White House adviser Karl Rove traveled to Los Angeles this week to pay homage to the anti-immigration enforcement lobbying group for Latinos: the National Council of La Raza.

"La Raza" is Spanish for "The Race."

It's bad enough the White House lent its prestige to The Race's annual conference. But did you know the Bush administration has forked over millions of federal tax dollars directly to The Race?

According to GOP Rep. Charlie Norwood of Georgia, The Race snapped up $15.2 million in federal grants last year alone and more than $30 million since 1996. Undisclosed amounts went to get-out-the-vote efforts supporting La Raza political positions. The U.S. Department of Education funneled nearly $8 million in taxpayer grants to the group for a nationwide charter schools initiative.

Among The Race's most infamous government-funded charter schools is La Academia Semillas del Pueblo, the Los Angeles public school that teaches "Aztec math" (ancient dot math is the new math) and the Mexican indigenous language of "Nahuatl." The ethnic separatist principal of the school, Marcos Aguilar, told a sympathetic UCLA interviewer:

"We don't want to drink from a White water fountain, we have our own wells and our natural reservoirs and our way of collecting rain in our aqueducts. We don't need a White water fountain. . . . We are not interested in what they have because we have so much more and because the world is so much larger. And ultimately the White way, the American way, the neo liberal, capitalist way of life will eventually lead to our own destruction."

That's the tip of the iceberg. I found dozens of other publicly subsidized charter schools sponsored by The Race and funded with our money, including:

-- Aztlan Academy in Tucson, Ariz. According to The Race, the school's success rests on "Aztlan's ability to integrate a meaningful Chicano Studies program into their lives, language, and academics, as a means of developing their intellects as well as their pride and self-esteem." The school's name -- a reference to a mythical swath of the vast Southwestern U.S. expanse, which Latino activists claim is their rightful homeland and which they seek to reconquer for Mexico -- says it all.

-- Mexicayotl Academy in Nogales, Ariz. Who needs the three R's? At Mexicayotl, it's all about the three M's: me, me, me! The school's program is "structured and developed around the concepts of identity, culture, and language." Second mission: supporting local ethnic lobbying efforts "to right social injustices by educating the community and helping create social change." Under "greatest achievements," the school's website lists its participation in a "Peace & Dignity Run"; its visit from Rigoberta Menchu (the Marxist academic fraud from Guatemala who lied her way to a Nobel Peace Prize); and its sponsorship of the local annual Dia de los Muertos (the Mexican holiday).

-- The Dolores Huerta Preparatory High School in Pueblo, Colo. It's named after the far-Left Latina labor union activist who recently railed that "Republicans hate Latinos," praised illegal alien marchers and screeched that "We didn't cross the borders, the borders crossed us" in a hate-filled tirade before Arizona students.

-- Academia Cesar Chavez Charter School in St. Paul, Minn. Board of Directors member Louis Mendoza, an activist Chicano Studies professor, pushed the school to lobby for the federal DREAM Act (providing in-state tuition discounts to illegal alien students not available to legal non-residents). The school's website features one flag on its front page: the Mexican flag.

The White House will tell you that the National Council of The Race is a "moderate," mainstream civil rights group. But there's nothing "moderate" about The Race's advocacy of driver's licenses and in-state tuition discounts for illegal aliens. Or its opposition to strengthening security for identity documents and improving cooperation on immigration enforcement between state, local and federal enforcement immigration officials. Or its all-out war on the House GOP's border security and enforcement-first bill passed last December.

President Bush pays lip service to immigration enforcement and assimilation, while the White House sends Karl Rove to make nice with the separatist leaders of The Race and the Bush Education Department showers our tax dollars on radical Reconquista schools. It doesn't add up.

Unless, of course, you're using Aztec math.
