    Laguna Beach Screws CA

City of Laguna Beach DEVALUES State Land
in Order to Use It For a Day Labor Site!
    SEE NEWS STORY BELOW

While the state of California faces a $14 BILLION deficit, the city of Laguna Beach favors a DAY LABOR SITE and prevents the state from selling valuable land.

Refresher: The City of Laguna Beach operates a day labor site on California State land that they SQUATTED on 10 years ago. Cal Trans, who owns the land, attempted to sell it for full market value of $1.3 Million back in July. Because the land is within Laguna Beach city limits they have the right to zone it as they please. The city of Laguna Beach threatened that if anyone tried to buy the land and remove the day labor site they would zone the land as "open space", thereby DEVALUING it's worth to nothing. This action scared away any buyers and Cal Trans was forced to pull it off the auction block.

Since the city of Laguna Beach announced they were going to zone the land as "open space" (with limited use allowing it to be used ONLY as a day labor site) it has been reappraised and the value has dropped from $1.3 Million down to a mere $18,000.

With the state of California facing a $14 BILLION deficit the city of Laguna Beach has successfully kept the state from selling this valuable piece of land.

    WHY?
It was all because the city of Laguna Beach wanted to continue to operate a DAY LABOR SITE!

Laguna Beach day labor land for sale as open space
Caltrans seeks $18,000 for the property, which had been appraised at $1.26 million when it was intended for commercial use.

Caltrans on Wednesday put up for sale the strip of land where Laguna Beach's day labor site is located, asking a fraction of the price it sought when the parcel was slated for commercial use.
The state transportation agency sent a letter to public agencies setting the price of the land, which will be zoned as open space, at $18,000. That's a marked shift from the $1.26 million Caltrans initially sought for the 16,810-square foot parcel in May when the agency thought the land could be used for commercial development.
Laguna Beach, which has had the day labor site on the strip for more than a decade, argued the land should be zoned as open space. Caltrans delayed the sale and the parties agreed to hire an independent appraiser, who determined the land would likely be used as open space, said Caltrans spokeswoman Pam Gorniak.
"The independent appraisal valued the property based as open space," she said. "We don't tell them anything. They go in and they look at what they have to, they talk to who they have to."
Laguna Beach has come under fire by anti-illegal immigration activists who oppose the day labor site and want the city to screen workers for their immigration status. The city has defended the hiring center on Laguna Canyon Road as a way to prevent day laborers from seeking work on the streets and in residential neighborhoods, which occurred before the site existed.
City Manager Ken Frank said he expected the city would offer to buy the property and didn't anticipate any competition from other public agencies, which have 60 days to offer to buy the site before it is placed for public auction. Frank said the city could continue to allow the day labor center on the parcel once it was deemed open space.
"Nobody else will be interested," he said. "It's too small for housing, you can't put housing on it, you can't do anything with it."
Laguna Beach has been leasing the site from Caltrans for the nonprofit that operates the day labor center since a local resident discovered the property was owned by the state. City resident Eileen Garcia, who opposes the site, said she thinks the state could have gotten more money for the land had the city not pressed to zone the land as open space.
"Laguna Beach threatened to zone this property based solely on getting it cheaper so they could pick it up for their own purposes," said Garcia, who sued the city in a bid to halt the day labor center's operations and lost this year. "I personally feel they've cheated the State of California."

    Anyone believe this crap?

All the state has to do is withhold state funds, and refuse them a share of federal funds. See how quick they come around when the taxpayers have to pick up the tab for EVERYTHING. The state has options IF THEY WANT TO USE THEM.

The City of Laguna Beach is also the same city that received $8 MILLION in FEMA money after the landslide in 2005.

So, they break Federal immigration laws (by aiding and abetting illegal aliens) but the Federal government turns around and rewards them with millions of taxpayer funds to rebuild a hill.
