Four people have been killed, including the gunman, in a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas today, according to senior U.S. officials and the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.

Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, told CNN he had been briefed on the deadly incident and said there were also 14 injuries. Authorities were concerned another shooter might be at large, but no link to terrorism has been discovered, the lawmaker said.

Before McCaul's appearance on CNN, Fort Hood's media office cited an initial report that the shooter was dead but said the report was not confirmed.
Sgt. Maj. Nicholas Connor, a spokesman for Fort Hood, told ABC News that authorities would lift a "shelter in place" order as soon as they believed it was safe to do so.

President Obama said his national security team is "working with folks on the ground to determine exactly what happened and to ensure that everyone is secure."

"The situation is fluid right now... Any shooting is troubling," the President said. "We’re heartbroken that something like this might have happened again. I don’t what on the comment on facts until we know exactly what happened.

But just for now I would hope that everyone across the country keep the families of Fort Hood in our thoughts and our prayers... We don’t yet know what happened tonight but obviously that sense of safety has been broken once again. We need to find out exactly what happened."

Scott and White Hospital in nearby Temple, Texas, said it activated its internal incident management system and "is receiving patients" related to the shooting.

"Unfortunately, this is something that we here at Fort Hood have experience with and this is something that is conjuring up a lot of memories of the past," Connor said. "We're just hoping we can get to the bottom of this as soon as possible."

Fort Hood, in Killeen, Texas, was the site of a mass shooting in 2009, when Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan killed 13 people.

During Hasan's trial, he called himself a "mujahedeen," or Muslim holy warrior, and did not deny he was the shooter. He was convicted and received the death penalty in August 2013.

Fort Hood live update: Shooter was being evaluated for PTSD

The gunman who killed at least three people at Fort Hood in Texas and then shot himself was under evaluation for PTSD and was being treated for depression and anxiety, Fort Hood’s commanding general said Wednesday night.

Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, in his first news conference since the shootings, said the man was on medication but did not specify what kind. He said a definitive diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder had not been made.

Milley said the alleged shooter, identified by other officials as Spec. Ivan Lopez, 34, was a military truck driver who served four months in Iraq in 2011. He was married and had family in the area, Milley said.

Update as of 11:59 p.m. EDT: The soldier who killed 3 people before turning a gun on himself was identified as Spc. Ivan Lopez, ABC News reported, citing law enforcement authorities, adding that an official did not identify Lopez at a news conference but said the shooter had arrived at Fort Hood in February from another base.

Spc. Ivan Lopez, 34, was identified by the sheriff of Bell County, Texas, as the alleged Fort Hood shooter, CBS News reported. Not much is known about his motive, but it's believed he got involved with a some sort of soldier dispute.

Lopez is reportedly an active member of the military,KWTX reported. The news site said he was an active duty soldier who was a truck driver in the Army. The gunman reportedly wore a uniform at the time of the shooting on Wednesday. At first it was thought that he wasn't the only shooter during the attack, but now it appears that he acted alone, according to reports.

He appears to be wearing a wedding ring in the photo but his partner has not been identified. It is not yet known if the alleged shooter had children.

Four people were reportedly killed at the base Wednesday, including the shooter. It is believed he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the site of the attack. The shooting occurred around 4:25 p.m. local time, KWTX said. The attacker reportedly got out of his vehicle and began to open fire around Motor Pool Road and Tank Destroyer Boulevard. The shooter injured more than a dozen people and some of them are said to be "quite critical." He killed three individuals.

Victims were taken to Scott & White Memorial Hospital.NBC News said the wounded are being treated in a secured “command center.” Fort hood was in a lockdown when the shooting first occurred, but the lockdown appears to have been lifted.

It’s not the first time Fort Hood has come under attack. In 2009, the deadliest attack on a domestic military installation in American history took place when 13 people were killed and more than 30 people were wounded in a mass shooting.

Fort Hood Gunman Did Not See Combat in Iraq Tour, Officials Say

The soldier who shot three people to death at Fort Hoodapparently did not see combat during a tour in Iraq three years ago but was clearly troubled, under treatment for depression and anxiety and being evaluated for post-traumatic stress disorder.

As authorities tried to piece together a motive on Thursday for the rampage, a picture began to emerge of the gunman, identified as Spc. Ivan Lopez, 34, a married father who transferred from another base in Texas in February.

Lopez served eight years in the Army National Guard in Puerto Rico before enlisting in the Army in June 2008, military officials told the Senate on Thursday. He was assigned to Fort Bliss, Texas, before transferring to Fort Hood two months ago, according to military records.

Gen Mark Milley, told reporters Wednesday night that the gunman was being evaluated for PTSD but had not been diagnosed. Besides the depression and anxiety, Lopez had trouble sleeping and was taking Ambien, Army Secretary John McHugh told the Senate.

There is no record that Lopez saw combat or was injured during a four-month deployment in 2011 to Iraq, where he was a truck driver, military officials said. At that time, American forces were withdrawing from Iraq.

Records show no combat citations or ribbons, the officials said. They stressed that it did not mean Lopez was not suffering serious psychological problems — only that they did not appear combat-related, as is often associated with soldiers suffering from PTSD.
They said there was also no medical confirmation the Lopez suffered a traumatic brain injury. Milley said that the soldier “self-reported” a brain injury.

Lopez, who lived near the post, lost his mother in November, the mayor of his hometown in Puerto Rico told a radio station there.

At the address believed to be Lopez’s apartment, in Killeen, a woman answered the door Thursday morning. Asked by NBC News whether she was the gunman’s wife, she nodded but did not answer.

“I’m sorry. I don’t feel well,” she said. “I’ve been talking to police all night.”

A short time later, family members came to the apartment and escorted her to an unknown location.

Neighbors told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that Lopez moved into an apartment about three weeks ago with his wife and daughter, about 3 years old. One neighbor said that the family “seemed real sweet.”

A neighbor told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that Lopez’s wife became hysterical when his name surfaced in television reports as the gunman. She left with investigators, the station reported.

The Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia reported that Lopez was from the town of Guayanilla and was a percussionist. Sources described as knowing Lopez from childhood told the newspaper that his grandfather died in October, the month before his mother died.

The mayor of Guayanilla, Edgardo Arlequin Velez, told the Puerto Rican radio station on Thursday that Lopez was “a peaceful young man and especially talented.” He said he taught Lopez for six years while he directed the school band.

The mayor said Lopez’s parents were always taking care of him, and that he had a tight-knit family and friendships.

“He had an excellent life, which I witnessed,” the mayor said on Radio Isla 1320 AM. He said the news of the attack “has shaken us, and we regret it very much.”

Lopez’s mother was a nurse in Guayanilla, and Lopez attended her funeral, the mayor said.

He joined the island National Guard in 1999 and went on a peace and security mission to Egypt in the mid-2000s, a guard spokeswoman told The Associated Press.

McHugh, the Army secretary, said background checks turned up no involvement with extremist organizations. But he said investigators were not making assumptions and would follow the facts.
