Afghan Citizen Living In Philadelphia To Be Deported After Failing To Disclose Ties To Anti-western Insurgent Group

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Authorities in Philadelphia say a man from Afghanistan has been sentenced to immediate deportation for lying about his affiliations to an insurgent group.

Hayatullah Dawari, 62, of Philadelphia, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of immigration fraud and was sentenced to two years in prison. That sentence, however, was suspended for immediate deportation.

Officials say Dawari is an Afghanistan citizen who became a legal permanent resident of the U.S. around November of 2008. He then applied for U.S. citizenship in 2013, and on his application, Dawari answered “no” to the question, “Have you ever been a member of or associated with any organization, association, fund, foundation, party, club, society, or similar group in the United States or in any other place?”

On Friday, Dawari admitted he’d failed to disclose his prior relationship with an anti-western insurgent group active in Pakistan and Afghanistan called Hezb-e-Islami Gulbuddin.

Dawari will be transferred into immigration custody and will be removed from the country. He also relinquished his status as a legal permanent resident and is permanently inadmissible to the U.S.

The case was reportedly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Philadelphia Police Department.
