After Trump visit, Mexicans say humiliation complete

After Trump visit, Mexicans say humiliation complete

David Agren, Special for USA TODAY 6:59 a.m. EDT September 1, 2016

VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico — Mexicans lashed out at unpopular President Enrique Pena Nieto's decision to meet with Donald Trump on Wednesday as analysts said the meeting appeared to favor the Republican presidential nominee.

Jesús Silva-Herzog, a Mexican academic, called the encounter the "biggest stupidity in the history of the Mexican presidency."

In the meeting, Peña Nieto didn't demand that Trump apologize for calling Mexican migrants rapists and criminals. He also stood silently by in their joint press conference while Republican candidate repeated his promise to build a border wall between the countries.

Hashtags calling on Peña Nieto to resign trended on Twitter after the meeting.

“The humiliation is now complete,” tweeted Carlos Loret de Mola, a news anchor for broadcaster Televisa.

Even before he arrived in Mexico City, social media lit up with many Mexicans telling Trump he was unwelcome.

But they saved their harshest criticism for Peña Nieto, who is already suffering from historically low popularity ratings — less than 25% — after a series of corruption scandals and revelations that he plagiarized parts of a thesis he wrote for his law degree.

“It feels as if you had an abusive neighbor, who bullies you non-stop, attacks you, offends you … your father knows it … and you invite him to the house for dinner,” tweeted José Merino, a political science professor.

Mexican president: I told Trump we wouldn't pay for wall

Here's what Mexican leaders have said about Donald Trump

"Trump achieved his purpose: He can claim he was taken seriously by a foreign government," said Carlos Bravo Regidor, professor in the journalism department of the Center for Investigation and Teaching in Economics in Mexico City. "He softens his image regarding Mexico without actually changing his stance. He looked serene, firm, presidential."

As for Peña Nieto, Regidor said that the president "offered a platform for a candidate who has been openly hostile to Mexico and Mexicans, who has portrayed us as dangerous, criminals, rapists. And for what?"

    LOL!!

Yes, I suppose accepting an invitation from your President is a humiliation.

Yes, I suppose spending a fortune and cramping an already busy schedule to accept the invitation is a humiliation.

Yes, I suppose complimenting your country, people and leaders is a humiliation.

Yes, I suppose committing to work together to solve problems is a humiliation.

But in the rest of the world, outside of Mexico, these things would be considered polite, generous, proper, smart and the epitome of good diplomacy.
