Capitol complex locked down after reports of sounds of gunfire
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Capitol Police said Friday they were investigating reports of sounds of gunfire in the garage of the Rayburn Office Building, where members of the House have their offices.
The entire Capitol complex has been locked down, CNN's Dana Bash reported.
"Capitol police are investigating sounds of gunfire in the Rayburn garage," CNN producer Deirdre Walsh reported from the Rayburn Building.
Tunnels connect all of the buildings in the complex.
"They have no victims at this time, and they have no active shooter," said Mike Brooks, a law enforcement expert.
He noted that Capitol Police have a firing range in the basement.
The Containment and Emergency Response Team was searching the area, Brooks said.
Tunnels connect all of the buildings in the complex.
The alert came moments after a press conference held by Rep. John Sensenbrenner on immigration reform, Walsh said.
"We saw several Capitol Hill police officers running quickly down the hallway," she said. Soon after that an announcement was made throughout the building.
Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Michigan, was conducting a House Intelligence Committee hearing at the time, according to an Associated Press report. Hoekstra interrupted a witness to tell those at the hearing to remain in the room and said doors must be closed.
"It's a little unsettling to get a Blackberry message put in front of you that says there's gunfire in the building," he told AP.
Business continued as usual on the Senate side, Bash said.

Police say shots fired at House office building
Capitol in lockdown mode after sounds coming from garage
BREAKING NEWS
The Associated Press
Updated: 10:10 a.m. CT May 26, 2006
WASHINGTON - The sound of gunfire was heard in the garage of a House office building Friday as police sealed off the nearby Capitol.
Capitol police were investigating “the sound of gunfire in the garage level of the Rayburn House Office Building,” said an announcement on the internal Capitol voice alarm system.
The Senate was in session at the time, but the House was not.
Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich., conducting a House Intelligence Committee hearing, interrupted a witness to request those attending the meeting to remain in the room and said the doors must be closed.
“It’s a little unsettling to get a Blackberry message put in front of you that says there’s gunfire in the building,” he said.
Jeff Connor, a spokesman for Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., said Capitol Hill police notified the office that gunfire was heard in the Rayburn building garage.
“They specifically said there was the sound of gunfire on one of the garage levels of the Rayburn House office building and asked staff to remain in their offices,” Connor said.
While the House was adjourned for the Memorial Day weekend, at least one committee was meeting.
At the same time, Capitol police went room to room in at least parts of the Capitol advising staff to stay in their offices, according one House aide whose office was advised.
