New state law causing headaches for some employers
Lupita Murillo Reports
New state law causing headaches for some employers
Posted: Dec 31, 2007 06:48 PM CST
The new year brings a new law to Arizona, forcing employers to check their payrolls for illegal immigrants.
If business owners are not in compliance, they could lose their business license.
Governor Janet Napolitano signed the employer sanctions bill into law on July 2. Soon after, businesses filed a lawsuit asking a judge to hold off. The judge refused to block it.
Now that the law is going into effect, some business owners say it's going to hurt their bottom line.
Three new employees were hired at Pastiche over the last three weeks. Two made the "cut" after going through the e-verify system. One person didn't meet the qualifications and was let go.
Pat Connors opened the restaurant nearly a decade ago. He says the new law is "turning up the heat" on employers. "The pool will diminish for employers which will require more people to be hiring aggressively, trying to take other employees eligible for employers."
The new law is tumbling the hotel industry. At Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, the H-2B visa is causing a problem. The visa allows temporary workers from outside of the country to come into the U.S. and work for 10-months. But that visa hasn't been renewed.
Brian Johnson, managing director for Loews, says "I would love to hire Americans to do housekeeping jobs, culinary, stewards... I can't get them so I have to go outside the country, and now they're saying you can get them anymore."
The hospitality industry pulls-in $19-billion a year in Arizona. It's the second largest industry in the state.

All the new employees will be spending their wages in the community. They will not be sending a portion of their pay to a different homelend !

Well , I guess they will just have to raise the pay and
offer incentives
I bet there will be no shortage of Americans showing up
for those jobs if they quit offering slave wages

Hmm...post an ad on the bulletin board at the local colleges and unversities...offer a fair and decent wage and good benefits...and watch how fast Americans start applying for the jobs.
