US Senate - Activity Update (11:15am PT)

Senate was out on lunch until just now.

They are back in session, with Durbin mentioning Ted Kennedy's situation, and now overviewing upcoming activity. He is talking now about the 2 judge nominees that they are expected to vote on this afternoon.

After that, comes consideration of the Iraq Supplemental Appropriations Bill. It is the piece of legislation that the AgJobs "lite" (eg. Feinstein-Craig) amnesty is part of. I don't know whether or not they will make it to debate or vote on it today. Tomorrow is looking more likely at this point.

I'll post updates back here should anything notable happen (today, at least).

    11:16am PT.

    florgal, cayla99 - Well, thanks

(Actually, here is a secret: I don't do all my monitoring of CSpan/2 from the 'idiot box', some I do online too - I can do that more places )

Just an update too - they are voting on the first of the 2 judges up for nomination. Progress is moving fairly quickly, but at the same time, many senators are taking a few moments to address Sen. Kennedy's health situation. So, things could move rather quickly, or they might grind down to a slow pace depending on if senators continue to talk about Kennedy or not.

    ...Still monitoring...

    Burn the lines!!

I have been getting through (waiting lots though) and have really driven home the point of zero amnesty.

I also really make it appoint about what a dirty tactic this is, to sneak in this bill and attach it to the Iraq bill. The two do not relate at all!

    Just a head's up -

Beginning consideration of Iraq Supplemental Appropriations Bill.

But first, Sen Byrd speaking about Kennedy right now (emotional speech too).

Update: 12:16 pm PT - Byrd is now going on to talk about ISAB.

Notable also is the fact that Byrd is the CHAIRMAN of the Appropriations Committee

    Dear Senator Smith,

Re: Immigration amnesties on Iraq funding bill:

Thank you for your efforts on behalf of American citizens who need to work--and in resisting the pressure of some in this country to open the floodgates of immigration. The Agriprocessors, Inc. raid in Iowa has revealed more of the depth of the crisis we face--for it is not only the employment of illegal workers--it was an entire network of serious, despicable crimes: drug labs, employment authorization fraud and conspiracy, ID theft. One credible story purports that agents for the company had brought many people from Asia into this country who did only a nominal level of work, or none at all, but still gained legal immigration status. This is abuse of our policies at the very worst.

How much more of this is taking place in this country? We hear from nation-wide media that people come to the US out of desperation and only to better themselves. The facts, however, are far different. They show vast networks of criminal activity such as drug dealing, welfare fraud, prostitution, drunken driving, thefts,---hardly a unified picture of honest, hard working new immigrants grateful to the American people.

With our legal immigration policy we have means to weed out dangerous elements, With illegal immigration we do not. That is why the American people have overwhelmingly opposed amnesties to illegal immigrants. These illegal immmigrants could use the several thousand dollars they spend on coming here, pool it with others in their home countries and start self supporting businesses. Too many of them come here instead for easy, accessible loot.

Please continue the work to defend our country from unscrupulous interests. By doing so you can count on me for my vote and support this November.

    Thanks April, great reminder.

As for ongoings in the Senate, at 2:37pm PT Byron Dorgan is talking about things (economic mostly) related to the ISAB (Iraq Supp. Approp. Bill).

No word at all of Feinstein-Craig amnesty amendment.

Sen. Murray now speaking as in morning business. 2:39pm PT

Now Sen Sanders about constituent feedback and effect of gas/oil prices. 2:40pm PT
