Who Cares About Citizens, Just Give Illegal Immigrants Amnesty & the Jobs

    October 1, 2009

The Obama Administration just cannot make the New York Times editorial board happy when it comes to immigration policy. First, the Obama Administration ends the practice of detention and removal of illegal immigrants caught during work site raids. Then, the Obama Administration decides not only shouldn’t they detain and remove illegal immigrant caught during work site raids, but they should give them temporary work permits so that those illegal immigrants will cooperate with prosecutors.

Now, the Obama Administration merely lets the employer target know it is coming to do a payroll audit, which results in the employer terminating the illegal immigrants it had been employing. The result is that the illegal immigrants merely find new jobs in the same location or move to another city to find work, which only continues to undermine the job market for citizens during one of America’s worst economic job markets. According to the New York Times, such a result is “ludicrous.â€

"New York Times confirms $250m deal with Carlos Slim

"The New York Times confirmed last night that it had reached an agreement to take an $250m (£171m) investment from a group of companies controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helú to offset crippling debt.

"Banco Inbursa and Inmobiliaria Carso, the companies owned by Slim, will in effect each supply $125m (£89m) in notes due in 2015, with warrants convertible into shares in a private financing arrangement with the beleaguered New York Times Company. The announcement last night confirmed speculation, widely reported yesterday, that the deal was in the offing.

"The publisher, which owns the New York Times, the Boston Globe and a host of US local newspapers, said it would use the money to help refinance its existing debt although it will continue to look for other finance options.

"In December, the company said it would not replace one of two $400m credit facilities, due to expire in May. It is exploring options to sell its New York headquarters and lease it back.

""The proceeds from this transaction will be used to refinance existing debt, including amounts currently borrowed under a revolving credit facility that matures in May 2009," said Janet L Robinson, president and chief executive of the New York Times Company.

""We continue to explore other financing initiatives and are focused on reducing our total debt through the cash we generate from our businesses and the decisive steps we have taken to reduce costs, lower capital spending, decrease our dividend and rebalance our portfolio of assets."

"Forbes claims that Slim, who made his money in telecommunications, is the third richest man on the planet with a wealth of $49bn from a portfolio of companies in retail, construction, banking, insurance and a number of other industries.

"In September, Slim bought a 6.4% stake in the New York Times Company for $128m (£73m).

"Before the deal was announced yesterday, it was suggested that Slim would not gain representation on the NYT publisher's board or be issued with shares that entitle him to special voting rights like those of the Sulzberger family, which has maintained control of the company for over a hundred years and has about 19% of its shares. However, when the warrants are exercised, Slim will become the largest shareholder in the company."

Whose parents immigrated to Mexico from Lebanon. I read that, rather than "celebrating their resulting diversity and immigrant heritage", there is, in fact, a great deal of resentment among many Mexicans toward this "son of immigrants" who was able to be so much more successful economically than native Mexicans. Unfortunately, perhaps Slim now considers "paying his debt to Mexico" for his success there to be gaining amnesty for those who have fled Mexico's failed (as a result of NAFTA) small family farm economy to find work in the U.S..

Also note that two ways Slim made his money was banking and construction. No industry now thrives on an unending supply of cheap, unskilled labor more than construction, and we know that the "world elite" wants first of all an international banking system controlled from the top.

What better way to begin than by "kicking down the doors" of national sovereignty in what was formerly the world's premier democracy - the United States - by in effect dissolving its borders with its two neighboring nations?

Evidently Spain, which, like the United States, became dependent upon immigrant labor from Latin America during its "pre-crash" building boom is now facing an economic situation which some say will "be as bad as the Great Depression". The Spanish government granted amnesty at least twice to many of those who were there illegally, so now they have a large number of now-unemployed immigrant laborers to deal with in addition to the native Spanish who have been thrown out of work.

It is high time the New York Times editorial board got itself out of the Upper West Side of Manhattan and spent a little bit of time among the Americans who are fighting to keep their heads above water. Maybe then their sympathy will directed in the right direction.
    I agree completely!!!
