Show Your Papers – Then Thank the Police for Asking

Arizona’s new law, requiring police officers to question persons when they have reasonable belief they are in the country illegally, has stirred up a hornet’s nest. Police are still required to have some other probable cause before questioning someone about their immigration status, but the media never reports that. It portrays the law as reminiscent of a scene from a bad World War II movie where Nazi officers approach an unsuspecting person who just got off a train and sternly ask, “Do you have papers?â€

When people ask to see my ID when using my credit card, I don't get upset. I'm glad they asked.

Me too. Nor do I mind it when the police make a legitimate stop. I have been stopped maybe a half dozen times. Once for speeding. Once because I had forgotten to put my new registration sticker on my license plate. At least twice during mass checks on the currency of vehicle registration, safety inspection, insurance coverage and drivers license. A couple of other times after hurricanes to prove residency in order to drive in the neighborhood. These are all legitimate reasons to be stopped. To me it should be a standard procedure for all states.

Believe me, this is nothing compared to Europe when we were stationed there several years ago. At that time Red Guard terrorist groups were all over the place. When the German police stopped you to verify your ID, etc. one police officer would check your paper work and another would stand at an angle with a machine pistol pointed directly at the driver's head.
