    Jared Polis

    From Wikipedia

"In 2001, he founded Sonora Entertainment Group,[7] which has developed a chain of movie theaters that screen films dubbed or subtitled in Spanish...."

Jared Schutz Polis (born May 12, 1975 in Boulder, Colorado[1]) is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and Democratic politician from the state of Colorado. A former chairman of the Colorado State Board of Education, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in November 2008, representing Colorado's 2nd congressional district. He was sworn in on January 6, 2009, succeeding Mark Udall. He is the first openly gay man elected to the House as a freshman.[2] Polis is included on a list of openly gay politicians in The Advocate's "Forty under 40" issue of June/July 2009.[3]

Polis received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Princeton University after attending the La Jolla Country Day School in San Diego, California and lives in Boulder, Colorado. He is the son of Stephen Schutz and Susan Polis Schutz.

    [edit] Business

Polis has founded a number of companies and is estimated to be worth well over $160 million.[4] He founded American Information Systems, an internet access, web hosting and application service provider. He, with his parents, also co-founded bluemountainarts.com, an online greeting card website, which he sold to Excite@Home three years later in a deal worth $780 million.[5][6] Later Excite sold the company for $200 million. In 1998, he launched the online florist company ProFlowers that expanded to become Provide Commerce, Inc., recently acquired by Liberty Media Corporation. In 2001, he founded Sonora Entertainment Group,[7] which has developed a chain of movie theaters that screen films dubbed or subtitled in Spanish. In 2006, he founded a seed stage incubator for web startups (Techstars). In 2004, Fortune estimated his personal wealth at $160 million.[8]. He is currently involved in fish farming business.[9]

(Among a number of other activities) "In 2004, he established the New America School, which primarily serves older immigrant youth ages 16–21 and has three campuses in the Denver Metro area. Polis serves as Superintendent."

And, in fairness, I have received flowers as a gift through "ProFlowers" and they were absolutely perfect - in freshness, quality, beauty, and the convenient way they were shipped. Included were a small box of chocolates from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Durango, Colo.: they were delicious! So, while deploring the man's politics, I had a wonderful experience with one of the companies he founded. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory (i googled) is a franchise with shops around the country - evidently you can watch them make the candy by hand at each. Beautiful flowers + yummy chocolates = very happy recipient.

Well, in fairness, if the quality of the services of all of the companies he and his family started are/were as excellent as my experience with ProFlowers, he earned it creatively and honestly. And certainly funding three entire new schools is a wonderful and worthy cause. However, one can only be saddened that, with free K-12 public education already available to immigrants--regardless of whether or not they are "worthy", or even here legally, he evidently has no interest in donating funds which also would assist students born in the United States, as was he.

Freshman Dems Rebel Against Pelosi Tax Plan

    Saturday, July 18, 2009 9:26 AM

Twenty-one freshman Democratic House members have signed a letter House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plan to raise taxes to finance a healthcare overhaul.

THE GROUP IS LED by REP. JARED POLIS, D-Colo., who circulated the letter, saying that the income surtax on the wealthy would place an undue burden on small businesses, some of which pay taxes in the same way as an individual, according to The Hill.

The letter had 22 signers, all freshmen except for Rep. Paul Hodes, D-N.H., who is in his second term.

“Especially in a recession, we need to make sure not to kill the goose that will lay the golden eggs of our recovery,
