    Another reason to learn english

so, once again, more has to be done for immigrants, where as, I as an immigrant had to stand on my own two feet

FULLERTON — Recent data show that Latino workers are more prone to workplace-related fatalities and injuries.
Safety consultant Art Pedroza offered companies an alternative to medical payouts and legal fees: train the workers how to not hurt themselves.

Latino workers are exposed to more risks and mortalities in the workplace than other workers. That's more reason to emphasize how to keep them safe," said Pedroza, outgoing president of the Orange County chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers. He spoke at a chapter meeting held Wednesday at the Anaheim Park Hotel in Fullerton.
In 2008, a total of 804 Latino workers nationwide, most of whom were immigrant workers, were involved in fatal work injuries. This number is down from a record high of 990 in 2006, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. About 43 percent of fatal occupational injuries involved immigrant workers from Mexico.
The industries that have the most fatal work injuries are construction, transportation and agriculture, where Latino workers are highly represented, according to a 2008 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
"Researchers and health communication professionals," Pedroza said in his PowerPoint, "must develop additional materials that are culturally appropriate and effective for workers who speak different languages and have varying levels of literacy."
Latinos, who tend to be visual learners, can learn through videos and hands-on training, Pedroza said.
Pedroza said cultural issues, lack of mentorship and training from supervisors, lack of written safety procedures and bilingual materials for non-English speaking workers, and a lack of safety devices in the workplace are the main reasons for work injuries among Latinos.
"We find that a lot of Latino workers are afraid to speak up because of a very high lack of training and language difficulty. In the past couple of years, I've seen a lot of chemical exposures where workers work with no gloves and respirators," said Pedroza, who works as a safety consultant and trainer.
Pedroza said some safety cases can drag out. He cited the 2003 case of Bimbo Bakery employee Rosa Frias, who lost her arm while working at a facility in South San Francisco. The Cal-OSHA fined Bimbo Bakery $21,750. After four years of appeals, the fine was reduced to zero because inspector retired and did not testify when the appeals hearing was held.
Pedroza recalled a food plant he recently worked with in which a worker lost his arm.
"The food plant has a big industrial mixer, and it was not designed with a guard in place. The employee's arm went into the machine so it was torn off," he said. "Those are things you can train employees not to do. So often facilities just don't comply with OSHA regulations."
Rocio Gonzalez, manager of workers' compensation of Friendly Franchises Corp. in La Palma, attended the program and said the company provides monthly, hands-on training to workers in both English and Spanish. The company, which owns franchises of Carl's Jr., Green Burrito, Papa John's and Denny's, has mostly Latino workers.
Gonzalez said providing hands-on training lowered the company's injury rate by 20 percent this past year.
Pedroza said providing adequate workers' training can save companies unnecessary expense.
"They (companies) will have to spend money on medical and legal bills," he said. "It's a lot cheaper to do the right thing."

First, are these illegal aliens or legal immigrants - or illegal aliens being called immigrants?

Either way, this is one more way to treat one race as if they're to be handled with kid gloves.

Seems these are jobs that even untrained Americans are more than willing to do.

Seems there's a push to hire everyone but Americans, and that is going to end!

How many pro-illegal alien groups (even latino/hispanic groups) say that they're hard workers who can do any job and never complain?

Anyone who believes that, I have some land on the moon for sale at a good price.

    What cry babies.

And unqualified for the jobs they probably bragged they could do.

Now they have to be TRAINED, so that low wage is costing them even more, unless they hire a trainer who knows as much as the ones they're training, which is nothing.

Let me count the ways that illegal aliens and race based immigrants steal jobs that even untrained Americans would LOVE to have.

One of the big issues here is that many of them won't wear safety
equipment because it isn't "macho". I used to work in construction and
have seen this a lot. They'll put on the gear when the boss is around then
take it off as soon as he leaves. If you push the issue with them their
    saftey gear conveniently "disappears".
