    Cesar Chavez: opposed illegal immigration?

Someone posted a brief bio of Lou Dobbs (Angry White man was what the post was called) in which Lou Dobbs talked about Cesar Chavez:

He found work, if not money, at a television-radio outfit in Yuma, Arizona, a border town with border problems. It was here Dobbs reported on César Chávez, as Chávez was working to build the United Farm Workers Union. "He was almost alone in his fight to win better wages and working conditions for farmworkers, and he was being fought by the growers associations, labor contractors who brought in 'green carders' from Mexico to undercut the UFW, and the Teamsters union who tried to create their own farmworkers union... and of course the farmers themselves, and the big agribusinesses," recalls Dobbs. "Nearly all the activists today forget that he was one of the most vocal opponents of illegal immigration because they were, in his eyes, working as scabs... setting up the so-called wet line"—UFW border militias —"to stop the entry of illegals."

Has anyone noticed how NONE of the latino/hispanic special interests groups EVER quote or even mention Cesar Chavez? Now we know why. Cesar Chavez OPPOSED illegal immigration!

He absolutely opposed illegal immigration. He used to report them to the INS, and started his own version of the Minutemen back then.

    How soon they forget...

CEASAR CHAVEZ WAS RIGGHT. ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IS NOT GOOD FOR ANYONE, INCLUDING THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT.

IT ESPECIALLY ISNT CONDUCIVE TO FORMING HEALTHY UNIONS, WHICH IS WHAT THE WORKER REALLY NEEDS TO HAVE STABILITY IN THEIR JOB.

ONLY THE CORPORATIONS BENEFIT FROM ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.

AND I QUESTION WHETHER GROUPS LIKE LA RAZA ARE SINCERELY FOR THE LATINO PEOPLE. AFTER ALL THEY GET TONS OF TAX MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT.....AND THE GOVERNMENT IS CONTROLLED BY COROPORATIONS. YOU FOLLOW THE MONEY TRAIL AND TELL ME WHERE THAT TAKES YOU.

THAT IS WHY LA RAZA IS ALLOWED INTO SECRET MEETINGS DURING THE DEBATE ON IMMIGRATION REFORM.

WHY WOULD ANY LATINO ADVOCACY GROUP BE RECEPTIVE TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE.

I don't know if Chavez was all that great, for a reason I will go into shortly.

First, though, Mayor Tom Potter in Portland, OR is now proposing naming a historic north- south highway, formerly Interstate Hwy 99, after Cesar Chavez. What do you think? Mayor Potter is also still working away at his day laborer hiring hall proposal with city funding.

My problem with Chavez is that, somehow, farmworker groups opposed mechanization in agriculture--I would think in order to save their own jobs. Since 1979 there has been a dramatic decline in US government support for farm mechanization--thus leading to a greater need for farmworkers. Once these people are in this country as farmworkers they quickly move on to many other more lucrative jobs, leaving farmers somewhat in the lurch and having to demand more farmworker allocations. Thus Feinsteins's Ag Jobs bill in the Senate.

I need to research these topics a little more deeply. Chavez supporters like Mayor Potter would point to the man as a liberator of downtrodden people. But did his group help to stop the modernization of farming and create a greater demand for immigrant labor? I am going to find out exactly who did this.

As to lifting up downtrodden Hispanic workers I would like to ask who it was that pioneered the development of modern agriculture in California Texas, Arizona and Nevada? It was probably the combination of efforts from many groups and individuals, not merely Latino workers. But as to the latter, the development of modern agriculture in those states, and others, has created a myriad of emplyment opportunities for those from less developed countries. THEY should be grateful to US!! They should be grateful to us for giving them opportunities to benfit themselves, and now a plethora of social benefits. Instead were going to name an avenue after a regressive, social misfit.

I support american farm workers. I do not support illegal ailen farm workers. Ceazer Chavez pointed to the most oppressed at the time.

Now with the pro illegal unions Im sure he would be a leader in "You Don't Speak For Me"

Im Pro union not pro illegal. When the unions stop pandering to illegals they will have my help and support again. Like Chavez, Im for american workers, not the wealthy, and the corporate that are currently pandered to by congressional conservatives.

I remember my grandmother supported Chavez's grape boycott way back when. Ever since I've read Chavez's stance on illegal immigration I have even more respect for Chavez than I used to. He was pro-union. He was FOR the working man. He was for LEGAL immigration. How anyone can find fault with that I'll never know.

I loved the creation of Unions back in the very late 1800's to early 1900's... (Anyone see the movie F.I.S.T) There was a lot of illegal immigrants and immigrants taking American jobs for pennies.... The American worker also got screwed out on everything and if they complained they got fired and replaced! There was no job security and a cheaper worker could take your job at a drop of a hat! We are falling into that trend again where illegals are taking American Jobs and demanding rights and other freedoms while "us" Americans are fighting for just our "laws" to be enforced!!! It was a different world in the 1800's where lawlessness was all over and there was no "tracking" systems in place... We are a nation of laws and as other nations as well......We are not the only nation that has immigration laws but it seems to me that we are the only nation that doesn't enforce them very well!!!
Our country's founders cherished liberty, not democracy.
