A Seattle teen shot and killed a man for his cellphone — then went to a friend’s house and complained the stolen gizmo wasn’t nice enough, police say.
Byron White, 17, now faces charges as an adult for killing David Peterson last month in the Washington city’s Greenwood neighborhood.

Byron White, 17, apparently enjoyed taking photos of himself with cellphones. He even shot and killed a man for a cellphone, police say. White was arrested March 1 as he tried to fly to Atlanta from Seattle.

White was on the lam for a week after the shooting until cops caught up to him at the airport last weekend as the boy tried to board a flight to Atlanta, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.

“David Peterson went out for a walk around the neighborhood after dinner and never returned, ” King County prosecuting attorney Dan Satterberg said in a statement. “He was a random victim from a chance encounter with a dangerous young man. That the evidence shows he was murdered for his cellphone by a teenager with a gun makes this all the more tragic and senseless.”

The alleged killer was motivated by robbery, Seattle cops say.

The Ballard High School student approached Peterson, 54, around 8:30 p.m. Feb. 23 and punched him in the head in a robbery attempt, the Post-Intelligencer reported.

Peterson fought back and went to a parking lot, where he called 911 to report the attempted theft. But as Peterson spoke, he saw White coming back for him and warned the dispatcher his attacker was returning.

White reportedly went to a friend’s home just blocks from the murder scene, where he told people there he had killed a man, the PI reported.
“He said that the man had seen his face, and he had to shoot him,” a detective wrote in court papers, the newspaper reported. “He showed his companions the phone he had finally taken from the man and expressed his disappointment that it was not a nicer model.”

Cops never recovered the gun, but say White admitted to the murder when he was arrested at Sea-Tac airport March 1.

White is charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and attempted robbery. He’s held in lieu of $2 million bail and is set next to appear in court March 17.

If convicted, the callous killer faces up to 35 years in prison.

Seattle police say teen murder suspect's mother helped with his arrest

When David Peterson was shot and killed in Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood, detectives say they had very little to go on. But in a matter of a few days, they had identified the suspect, and thanks to help from his own mother, arrested him at Sea-Tac Airport.

Homicide detective Cloyd Steiger says it started with the 911 call from Petersen, who was calling to report someone was trying to rob him. Police have yet to release the call, but Steiger describes what is on the recording.

"[Peterson] gives a basic description of the person, a basic description of what happened, and then says the person is walking back toward him and then there is a struggle and the phone goes dead," said Steiger.

They had eye witnesses to the crime and a distant surveillance camera recorded an unidentified suspect.

"He was running from the scene of the shooting right after it happened," said the detective. "He was running with a purpose, running a great distance. It wasn't like running to get away and hide. It was running, running, running."

At first, Seattle police said they were looking for three people. Steiger will not reveal what tip or piece of evidence lead them to 17-year-old Byron White. But he now says the two others with him that night are no longer suspects.

"We identified them early on, brought them in and questioned them, before the arrest of Byron White. They are witnesses in this case. They absolutely did not take part in this murder," said Steiger.

Steiger says the tip that led to White's arrest at SeaTac Airport last weekend came from the suspect's own mother, who called police when she learned her son was trying to fly out of state.

"She said, 'I have no choice.' That was the words she told me. 'I have no choice.' She's an upstanding citizen and she can't put up with this either and that's the double tragedy for her," he said.

Steiger says they have not been able to find the suspect's gun or the victim's phone, but he doesn't think either of them is needed to prosecute White for the crime.

The detective says White did confess and say he was sorry for what he did, but the apology came only after he was caught.

"Right before we got to the stoplight, we noticed about 50 to 100 teens coming to the middle of the street. It was a one-way street so we couldn't go any further. All of a sudden, one of them throws a garbage can on our car," she explained.

Images have emerged showing a security guard unconscious on the floor after he was knocked out by a teenager at a school struggling with discipline.
Alphonso Stevenson, a 63-year-old conflict resolution specialist hired to quell the violence at Bartram High School in Philadelphia, was allegedly assaulted by a 17-year-old student on March 21.
Stevenson was greeting students as they walked to class when the teenager knocked his clipboard from his hands, and when Stevenson went to reach it, the boy allegedly pushed him against a wall.
The staff member’s head smashed against a wall, knocking him unconscious and leaving him with a fractured skull, concussion and other injuries, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
