Tell Michael Steele Not To Support Amnesty Bill

According to this article, Chairman Steele intends to do a little kissing up to the pro amnesty crowd to try to win votes. We need to remind him that the very people in the Tea Party who fought against the health care bill are ready to fight an amnesty bill next. Unless the Republicans want to be on the same list as the Democrats, he better change his mind about encouraging Republicans to get on board with an amnesty bill.

Steele Agrees To Immigration Meeting After Grassroots Sit-In At RNC

Today, grassroots activists from the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) staged a sit-in and rally at the Republican National Committee offices to demand a meeting with Chairman Michael Steele. Within 20 minutes, Steele agreed to schedule a meeting with the demonstrators on March 31st.

Meanwhile, on Fox News today, Steele implied that he’s been meeting with activists for the past seven to eight months — which seems hard to believe given the fact that FIRM advocates felt the need to stake out the offices of RNC headquarters in order to get the chairman to agree to a meeting. Nevertheless, Steele did indicate that he’s concerned about the way his party has presented itself on the immigration issue and affirmed that the GOP is a Party of assimilation and apple pie:

I have been having discussions with leadership and with activist groups around the country on the immigration issue now for about seven or eight months. I have been very concerned about how we are positioned rhetorically, as well as from a political and policy side to make sure that we are working with our leadership on the hill and activists on the ground.

We are the Party of assimilation. We are the Party that has always stood for welcoming people. We got away from that in 06 and 08 and paid a dear price for it as you know. We shouldn’t be in the business of alienating Americans, but welcoming them. And showing that this is the process that’s expected to come here. This is the door you come through, the paper you fill out. Have a piece of apple pie, sing the star-spangled banner and get to work.

This is why I don't trust the Republicans when it comes to immigration reform.

By Julissa Treviño 3/24/10 3:43 PM Today, Immigration Impact, the blog of the Immigration Policy Center, reported on a shift in tactics in the immigration debate: A growing number of Republican lawmakers say the party needs to adjust its positions on Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) in order to boost Latino support:

More Republicans have acknowledged that the GOP must change its tune on Latinos and immigration, especially in the lead-up to midterm elections. This week, RNC Chair Michael Steele not only agreed to a meeting with an immigration advocacy group (after the group staged a sit-in), but went a step further to say that he’s concerned with harsh GOP rhetoric on immigration…
Last week, the newly formed Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles held a panel on reclaiming CIR for conservatives. Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), who says he has been working on a secret congressional working group on immigration, reiterated that President Obama failed to deliver on his promise of immigration reform in his first year. Diaz-Balart also pinned blame on Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for not allowing any immigration legislation to hit the floor until health care passed, then committed his support for CIR.

Last week, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) became the second Republican senator to publicly state his efforts for reform. Cornyn told a Spanish-language news wire, just before the release of the immigration blue print, that he was committed to working toward finding “common groundâ€

Called the GOP line and called my state GOP, leaving a very strong message. McCain, Jeb Bush, Ed Gillespie, Michael Steele, no Republican votes with amnesty or pathway to citizenship, Dream Act. 80% of Americans agree.

It sounds like the Republican Party Leadership is setting the stage for a cave in. While publicly proclaiming no amnesty they privately plan to pass a legalization of the illegals. This is why Obama is President. Now why would the Republican Party Leadership do that when 80% of the voters are against legalization? Because they're under the influence of the oligarchy. A few criminals show up and stage a sit in and Steele turns into mush. With a name like that you'd think he'd be a little bit tougher. But instead he gives in. And this is the party they want me to vote for in November? Forget it.

Instead of trying to win over the Laino support for future voters, they better pay attention or they will lose the voting base they already have. They push too hard and the Latino vote is all their going end with.
