Bush pushes for amnesty in final State of the Union
Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 1/31/2008 6:00:00 AM

Immigration activist William Gheen doesn't understand why President Bush would use his final State of the Union address to push something that the vast majority of the American people reject.

Bush addressed the issue of illegal immigration by saying that the administration is taking steps to secure the borders by increasing work site enforcement, and by deploying fences and advanced technologies to stop illegal border crossings. He went on to say they have effectively ended the policy of "catch and release" at the border, and by the end of this year the number of Border Patrol agents will be doubled.

But then Bush said: "We will never fully secure our border until we create a lawful way for foreign workers to come here and support our economy, and allow law enforcement to concentrate on those who mean us harm. We must also find a sensible and humane way to deal with people [who are] here illegally. "

William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration, says the president is once again pushing what amounts to amnesty. "He did the same thing two weeks before the 2006 election," says Gheen. "And the results were that his numbers and the support numbers behind the Republican candidates across the country took a dive."

Some people, says Gheen, even accuse Bush of throwing the last election to the Democrats by pushing his failed amnesty bill -- and he says it defies political reality for the president to once again push an agenda Gheen says is massively unpopular with the American people.
