SC senators to debate illegal immigration bill

SC senators to debate illegal immigration bill
    Tuesday, Feb. 08, 2011
    The Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina lawmakers are debating a bill designed to further crack down on illegal immigration, a measure that opponents call discriminatory.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to consider a bill allowing police to check the immigration status of someone suspected of being in the country illegally. The questions could come after a suspect is stopped for something else.

The proposal resembles a measure passed in Arizona last year that inspired a flurry of lawsuits.

Republicans in both the House and Senate call the measure a priority. It would expand the state's 2008 law that required businesses to check their employees' legal status.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says South Carolina is among 11 states considering a law like the one in Arizona.

I would love to hear why this is disciminatory! If we get pulled they immediately run OUR plates and license numbers to see if there are outstanding warrants etc. So PLEASE explain the discrimination part. Oh, silly me it's only discimination if you happen to be Hispanic and illegal! Otherwise it's perfectly fine.

This ticks me off to NO end! I admittedly do have a lead foot... I am waiting to get a speeding ticket. I won't mail in the fine I will be there in person, my last name falls in the middle of the alphabet. I'll be listening and taking notes on all the Hispanics in court ahead of me. I am so fed up I'll risk ticking off a judge to get my opinion heard!!![/b]
