    Barrasso New Wyoming Senator

    John Barrasso has been appointed as the new Wyoming senator today.

    Does anyone know what his position is on the amnesty bill?

    I'm ijust read that and was wondering the same thing. It is said that he is very conservative and the choice most capable of keeping the seat.

    State senator John Barrasso appointed to fill vacant Wyoming Senate seat

    Gov. Dave Freudenthal (D-Wyo.) appointed Republican state senator John Barrasso this morning to fill the vacated Senate seat held by the late Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.). The appointment is effective today, and has been forwarded to the Secretary of the U.S. Senate.

    Barrasso, who has served in the state Senate since 2002, is an orthopedic surgeon from Casper, Wyoming. During his tenure in the state legislature, he has focused on health care as a priority. He writes a weekly newspaper column offering medical advice, and makes occasional appearances on statewide television and radio.

    He ran for the Senate in 1996, and finished a close second behind Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) in a crowded GOP field. During the primary campaign, he came out in favor of abortion rights; Enzi campaigned as an opponent of abortion rights.

    Barrasso has said he will be running for re-election in 2008, when the special election for the remainder of Thomas’ term will be held.

    Freudenthal interviewed all three candidates yesterday before making the final decision. His spokesman declined to comment on the rationale behind the selection. He had until Monday to make the appointment, but made the pick several days ahead of schedule.
