{Sob} immigrants, their children struggling economically

Study shows immigrants, their children struggling economicallyRelated information E-mail this article Print-friendly version Discuss this article
All bizjournals.com NewsA new study shows that many immigrant families in Arizona are living in poverty or toiling near the bottom of the economic food chain.

The report released Wednesday shows that two-thirds of immigrant children in Arizona are in low-income families; 29 percent of immigrant kids live well below the poverty line and that median family income for immigrants in the state is 35,100 per year.

Non-immigrant families earn $52,600 per year and 17 percent of U.S.-born kids are living below the poverty line in the state, according to the study by the Annie B. Casey Foundation.

The Casey Kids Count 2007 report also found that 20 percent of all Arizona children live in poverty, a third of Arizona babies are born to foreign-born mothers and 28 percent of kids in the state live in immigrant families.

Arizona traditionally ranks poorly when it comes to children's indicators but the immigration numbers come at a time when illegal immigration and punishing employers who hire illegals is at the forefront of political debates.

Businesses argue that immigrant workers take jobs other won't do and are important to the economy. Others counter that businesses hire illegals because they offer cheap, sometimes under the table labor in sectors such as construction, food service, farming and tourism.

Yes, because these people keep reproducing without first having an education and the proper resources and support to raise a family in this country. Sorry, but that usually takes years of education, at least a high school or GED, most often times college, and a few years in a job before you MARRY and begin to have children and support a family. BTW, many of them are not married -- either their "partners" are not committed or have run off to other pastures, employment elsewhere, or back to S. American countries.

Like tonight. We're in our local Burger King, where almost every single worker, most likely undocumented, were pregnant. Now, tell me how you are going to support a family on Burger King wages?

The problem is, these people are having children as soon as they can reach the pedals on a car. We just don't do it that way in this country -- at least most people don't who are self reliant.

I know that at times, pregnancy occurs accidentally, to the best of us. But this particular population is reproducing without any thought to whether or not they can support their families. These are absolutely rampant birth rates with no way to sustain them, even ON the many forms of public assistance they seem to love to make use of.

But we don't ever want to talk about THAT.

It's so true. A co-worker told me his daughter knew of at least four 8th grade girls at her middle school were pregnant. Recently in the news, an expectant mother was killed in a car accident, and they managed to save her baby. The mother's age?? 16!! To top it off, she already had an 11-month old at home. Uneducated children having more children who will probably be uneducated as well!! No wonder many of them live in poverty. Wonderful culture!

Children having children ....seems to me that used to be a problem here in the U.S. as well, for those that were on welfare roles for generations.

Then we got all of those, if not most of those folks off of welfare.

And now we've had an invasion of an entirely new group of them that we will most likely now support again for GENERATIONS, AGAIN.

Tell me, how can we be putting up with this?

Seriously, in nursing school, I have been told that this is a part of "their culture" to have children at a young age. Well, maybe you do that in your country, but here you DON'T do that HERE until you're ready to support those children!

jimm...SO TRUE. I mean, are we supposed to feel compassion for these people because they live below the poverty line? Perhaps if they'd think twice before having children they can't afford, they might be able to pull themselves out of poverty.

I long ago stopped feeling sorry for these people.

What a joke I'm an American and I am struggling!!! I am educated and have a trade too.... My job is given to H1-B's and I am under-employed!!! Because its cheaper to "hire" imported workers I have my wage under cut to cheap foreign labor! I don't have a fall back job because most in my area are given to even cheaper illegal labors!!! What about the report for unemployed, under-employed Americans that are struggling??? Bah to liberal media!!!

My mom is a retired Medical Technologist. She has a degree in Microbiology, and had worked for 20 years in her field when suddenly the field was glutted with Fillipinos who immigrated here legally from the Phillipines.

The problem? These Fillipinos were willing to work for pennies on the dollar of what the standard was for medical technologists. My mom ended up taking early retirement because she was laid off from her $25.00 an hour job and was replaced by a Fillipino. When my mom tried to get work elsewhere, she was offered $13.00/hour!! She refused to work for that. Fortunately, she was in a financial position that she could retire.

Today, the field of Medical Technology is almost entirely taken up by Fillipinos. And the wages are less than half of what they were 10 years ago!!

A career in medical technology requires a bachelor's degree plus a one-year internship in a laboratory. Then you have to pass a state board and get your license.

    This is NOT unskilled labor!!!

I'm a Systems Administrator which works on computer systems of all aspects! It is not unskilled labor as well! But H1-B's are bargains for companies to keep costs down and profits up... The next step is outsourcing which is also un-American!!! I work for a consulting firm (ran by Americans) that contracts me out to major banks because its so hard to get a steady job in some companies because the pay is so depressed... I make more money as a consult then in some companies working for them!!!

I think that the Mexican culture LIKES these young girls to have babies - they encourage it. They want to populate the U.S. with this particular "ethnic group", so they do it this way. They are trying to outbreed the caucasians.

I raised my family on alot less than that and got no free services. There's a whole lot of people living in poverty......I mean isn't that what they needed them here for? Work for less than Americans would? Why whine about it? From what I hear it's alot worse in Mexico......how can they send billions back every year if they're all so poor?
