Police arrested a 35-year-old felon on several charges, including assault of an elderly person, after he attacked a 71-year-old white man at a campaign event in New Haven, Conn., for being “in his park where young, black kids are playing.”

Jorge DelaPaz was arrested on charges of “assault in the third degree of an elderly person, carrying a dangerous weapon, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a pistol and interfering with police,” the New Haven Register reported.

Police told the paper that the victim was eating a hamburger in the Goffe Street Park following a Toni Harp mayoral event that afternoon.

DelaPaz reportedly told the man that he shouldn’t be “in his park where young black kids are playing.” After the victim refused an order from DelaPaz to pick up a football, the suspect punched the man multiple times in the face, knocking him to the ground, witnesses told police, according to the Register.

DelaPaz fled the scene on foot, but was quickly apprehended. He resisted arrest and injured the leg of an officer, the report said. Police found a Sig Sauer P239 handgun, a set of brass knuckles and a voter registration card in the suspect’s backpack.

Police say DelaPaz is a convicted felon, the Register reported.
