Business Owners: Lets Get Back to English Together

I have been around here for sometime, and around the immigration issue for some time. I have seen the good, the bad and the down right dirty (500,000 marching and chanting). One thing I noticed is that there are business owners all over the nation who want to help get us back to communicating as a nation, but are afraid to speak out on the immigration issue.

Then I heard about a gross-roots group (seriously like 3 people at the moment) who had a different take. Instead of focusing in immigration, they want to focus on the cultural aspect that is being forced down businesses throats. I agreed to help the group establish their web presence and have started like the idea.

The idea stems from the fairly successful 'se habla espanol' campaign and seeks to reverse its misgivings.

The goal is to produce and distribute flyers, signs and posters - many simple in nature - that will let customers and patrons know a business is English friendly.

The hope is to eventually get immigrant workers to want to learn English and assimilate and communicate with other staff on the job and to be able to communicate with customers better and improve their status. Thus destroying the already well established 'New Segregation'.

FACT: All across the USA today there are immigrant (legal or not) workers being forced into kitchens and onto production lines for a low wage. These workers are held down in society by their lack of English knowledge, and their employers are happy to oblige them in their ignorance.

FACT: In restaurants all across the USA today Managers, waitresses, bartenders and other staff are being FORCED to learn a minimal amount of a foreign language (Spanish) to keep their jobs. All so they can communicate with the Spanish speaking kitchen or other staff, which remain highly segregated in their positions and (in most cases) are not encouraged to learn English or use it at work. - Doesn't that sound unfair?

FACT: In many factories, food processing plants, restaurant kitchens, fast food establishments, and on construction sites companies are GOING OUT OF THEIR WAY to make sure all staff have to speak Spanish by hiring Spanish fluent managers whose English skills are terrible, allowing only Spanish-language radio to be played, and advertising for jobs ONLY in Spanish. - This makes many English speaking employees uncomfortable with their jobs and makes them feel unwelcome.

FACT: The above is a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and discriminates employees for positions based on nation of origin due to a foreign language being a known or strongly imposed requirement for the occupation.

FACT: The ACLU and the EEOC won't intervene and have sued businesses for requiring English on the job. So its up to us, the citizens, to take this issue on.

p.s. do not contact me about opposition for this group. I am currently not a member, just an advocate and have no place speaking officially on their behalf.

English is the language of INTERNATIONAL business, yet it is NOT OUR country's OFFICIAL language?! Makes NO sense! And we had better act NOW, for WITHOUT English, there COULD NOT and WOULD NOT be the UNITED STATES of AMERICA! My Brazilian friend warns Americans to OFFICIALIZE English FAST or your GREAT country is GONE!
