Border incident betrays immigration flaws
To the Editor:


— The following incident could only happen in America. On Jan. 3, gunmen assaulted a guard outpost near Sasabe, Ariz. A Tennessee National Guard team was on duty when they were attacked by 12 men armed with automatic weapons in fatigues and armored vests. On approach to the outpost the gunmen raised their weapons to shoulder height and split into two groups in an attempt to flank the outpost.
At that point the guardsmen retreated from the post and called the Border Patrol. Now they are under investigation by the Arizona House Homeland Security Committee. The Chairman Ward Nichols said the incident, "may send a message that the National Guard will retreat if faced by armed individuals."
Hello, Mr. Nichols, well hell yeah! What idiot or group of idiots placed the National Guard in harm's way by making it known that they are only allowed to observe. They are NOT allowed to stop, arrest, or shoot armed illegal immigrants!
I hope a whole brigade of illegal Iranians or terrorists don't decide to cross the border with automatic weapons! These guys do not sound like your everyday illegal crossing the border to find a job!
And, by the way, when the Border Patrol got back to the site these guys could not be found! Great, huh!
These rules of engagement were negotiated with the National Guard at the federal level.
There has been some confusion about the incident. What is clear is this. They were heavily armed men in fatigues and Kevlar vests, who used tactical maneuvers when crossing the border. How many more of these people come across unnoticed? Why are they coming like this? What is there purpose? This should be sending a RED FLAG so far up the pole they would see it in Washington!
The bad guys know the limitations. They are testing the waters for things to come!
How asinine, is it to have these people on the border only to watch and record these people crossing the border? What constitutes self defense?
I wonder if Chairman Nichols would have stood his ground, in the face of 12 armed gunmen.
To ask National Guardsmen or anyone else to do that kind of duty is ludicrous! What is the purpose? To provide statistics for someone in Washington's report? What deterrent is there for illegals not to cross the border, armed or not! You might as well have accountants or parking attendants doing that duty! They can all do what the Guard is allowed to do! It is typical government misdirection, to divert blame to those who are only doing what they have been directed to do by the government!
Illegal immigration will go on until, unfortunately, we are hurt badly as a nation by those who have crossed our border illegally!
Think about it. The Sept. 11 attacks were directed by 19 people who were carrying travel bags and box cutters! Where are the 12 terrorists with automatic weapons and Kevlar? Maybe, on their way to a school in San Antonio or a hospital in Scottsdale! Who would know, because no one was allowed to kill them at the border! But we got some great pictures of them as they attacked the outpost!
This is the kind of thing that happens in Iraq! Now it's happening in Arizona!
