Toward the end of the video, Lamar Smith said that Repubs will treat Demos better than Demos treated Repubs: Demos will be able to propose amendments. He also said that legislation will be posted for 72 hours, to give Americans the time to comment.
I like very much his conservative approach to illegal aliens: expand E-Verify and increase worksite enforcement now, take up the 14th Amendment later. Smith explicitly recognized that Demos failed to address Americans' number one concern: jobs. He stated that that was the reason for focusing on E-Verify and worksite enforcement. Bravo!

Poem Written in 1883,
Ellis Island Immigration facility built 1892. to process LEGAL immigrants.
Liberty Poem
The Statue of Liberty poem as it is known, was written by Emma Lazarus and is named "The New Colossus". The Statue of Liberty poem is actually a sonnet by Lazarus written to raise money for the building of the base and is now engraved on a bronze plaque and contained inside of the Statue of Liberty.
At first, Lazarus had refused to write the Statue of Liberty poem, but her friend Constance Cary Harrison convinced her that immigrants would be inspired by seeing the statuesque Lady Liberty welcoming them ashore.
Emma eventually wrote the poem and it was donated for auction at the Bartholdi Pedestal Fund.
The New Colossus
By Emma Lazarus, 1883
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
The beginning of the Statue of Liberty poem refers to the Colossus of Rhodes, which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The Colossus of Rhodes is actually a statue of the Greek god Helios, which stood over 100 feet tall (the tallest of its time) before it was destroyed by earthquake in 226 BC.
So, the Statue of Liberty poem refers to this new giant statue likened to the old that represented the god of light. The Statue of Liberty poem also sets itself apart from Helios in that the Mother of Exiles is more welcoming than conquering. She welcomes all castaways, misfits and homeless types dreaming of freedom.
ELLIS ISLAND - HISTORY
From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million immigrants entered the United States through the portal of Ellis Island, a small island in New York Harbor. Ellis Island is located in the upper bay just off the New Jersey coast, within the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. Through the years, this gateway to the new world was enlarged from its original 3.3 acres to 27.5 acres mostly by landfill obtained from ship ballast and possibly excess earth from the construction of the New York City subway system.

THEN THERE IS THE OBAMA INTERPRETATION.Jul 01, 2010
Obama edits Emma Lazarus poem on Statue of Liberty
In his immigration speech today, President Obama cited the most prominent symbol of America's immigrant tradition: The Statue of Liberty.
He also quoted famous lines from the Emma Lazarus poem inscribed at the base of the statue -- at least some of them.
Read on, and see if you can spot the difference (and we credit our friends at Politico for noticing this).
Here's Obama, according to the White House website:
Give me your tired, and your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to be free ...
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
And here's the Lazarus poem:
Give me your tired, your poor.
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
Yes, the president left out the section about "the wretched refuse of your teeming shore."
Politically correct? Or did he just overlook the line?
