House plans nationwide hearings on immigration

WASHINGTON - In a move that could jeopardize President Bush's efforts to push a comprehensive immigration plan through Congress, the House Republican leadership on Tuesday announced plans to conduct field hearings on a Senate immigration bill this summer.

"The Republican House wants to defeat the immigration bill," declared Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., the Democratic leader in the Senate. "This is a stall."
