The U.S. has halt*ed all U.S.-bound flights of Afghan evac*uees from two main bases over*seas for unspec*i*fied “health safe*ty con*cerns,” a move U.S. offi*cials warn will have a severe impact on the evac*u*a*tion oper*a*tion, accord*ing to a U.S. gov*ern*ment doc*u*ment seen Fri*day by The Asso*ci*at*ed Press.


U.S. Cus*toms and Bor*der Pro*tec*tion made the deci*sion on the rec*om*men*da*tion of the Cen*ters for Dis*ease Con*trol and Pre*ven*tion to halt the flights from U.S. bases in Ger*many and Qatar, accord*ing to the document.


It was the lat*est prob*lem in the Biden administration’s rushed and often vio*lence-plagued evac*u*a*tion of tens of thou*sands of Afghans and Amer*i*cans and oth*er for*eign*ers from Afghanistan, which peaked with a more than two-week mil*i*tary air*lift out of the Kab*ul air*port. That shut down Aug. 30, when Amer*i*can troops with*drew. Thou*sands of Afghan evac*uees remain in third-coun*try tran*sit sites, before being moved to the Unit*ed States or oth*er countries.


Nation*al Secu*ri*ty Coun*cil spokes*woman Emi*ly Horne said Fri*day that 32 Amer*i*cans and U.S. green-card hold*ers had left Afghanistan on Fri*day, 19 on a Qatar Air*ways flight and 13 oth*ers by land. It was only the sec*ond such evac*u*a*tion flight allowed by the Tal*iban since U.S. troops left.
