Well, they haven't owned it since they lost the war and SOLD them, with the exception of Texas, to the US. Mexico wasn't even a country before September 27, 1821, it belonged to the European country of Spain. It is not our fault that the Mexican government has been corrupt and abused it's citizens.

I don't see the French trying to colonize the Louisiana Purchase.
