Breaking: President Trump Announces He and First Lady Melania Have Tested Positive for Coronavirus

President Trump announced early Friday that he and First Lady Melania tested positive for the COVID-19 China coronavirus. The announcement came just hours after news broke that close presidential aide Hope Hicks tested positive for the virus on Thursday after presenting symptoms Wednesday night while on a campaign trip to Duluth, Minnesota with the President. Hicks was reportedly quarantined on Air Force One for the return trip to D.C.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”



Several close aides traveled with President Trump on his trips Tuesday to the debate with former Vice President Joe Biden in Cleveland, Ohio and on the trip to Duluth Wednesday. Trump traveled to Bedminster, New Jersey on Thursday for a fundraiser with fewer aides than normal.

President Donald Trump announced shortly after midnight that he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for coronavirus.



The president said he and the First Lady will be going into their “quarantine and recovery process immediately.”


The news of Trump’s positive test came hours after it was earlier confirmed that his close aide Hope Hicks had tested positive for the virus earlier on Thursday after exhibiting symptoms during Trump’s trip to Duluth, Minnesota, for a rally on Wednesday night.


Hicks had accompanied the president on that trip, and previously to the debate in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday night. The president faced Democrat candidate former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday night in that debate.


Trump’s announcement that he has contracted coronavirus after had earlier told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that he and the First Lady would go into quarantine after exposure to Hicks. He also tweeted that earlier in the evening:


It is unclear how the president contracted the virus, and it is unclear exactly when he did so.


Trump, at 74, is in the at-risk age group for coronavirus.
Earlier on Thursday, the president traveled to New Jersey for a fundraiser at his Bedminster property. Some in the press noted that Trump had fewer staff than usual traveling with him.


Trump had rallies scheduled on Friday and Saturday in Florida and Wisconsin, respectively, but it is unlikely that those will go forward.


Vice President Mike Pence, who chairs the White House Coronavirus Task Force, is scheduled to debate Democrat vice presidential contender Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) next week in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is unclear at this stage how this development will affect that, or the two future presidential debates scheduled for later in October.

The Trump campaign sent pizza to supporters gathered outside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as the commander-in-chief continues his battle against coronavirus inside.

Video captured by journalist Brendan Gutenschwager Sunday night showed a crowded swath of supporters being offered pizza while outside the Bethesda, Md., hospital where he is being treated.

The pizza, according to Politico, was sent over by the Trump campaign.

The campaign did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment, and a White House spokesperson said they were unaware of any pizza orders.

In video shared by Gutenschwager, a supporter could be heard shouting that, “Donald Trump brought us some pizza,” before encouraging others to come grab a slice.







On Friday evening, just hours after being admitted to Walter Reed, the commander-in-chief sent White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows out to thank the first supporters who had arrived outside.

“The president saw you, he said to come out here and thank you all with these chocolates,” before offering the cheering crowd candy bars.

Later that night, Meadows confirmed again that the president had sent him out to greet the supporters in a statement to Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

I want to read the message from Mark Meadows,” Ingraham said before reading a statement attributed to the chief of staff.
“This is the kind of president we have. He’s in the hospital with COVID, he sees the supporters out in front of the hospital live on your show, he sends me out to give Trump chocolate kisses to them as a thank you for the love and support they are sending his way,” Ingraham said, quoting Meadows.

Dozier/ShutterstockOn Sunday, President Trump also thanked his supporters by leaving the hospital and waving to them from the back seat of his car.

The president is expected to be released as soon as Monday, though an official discharge date and time has not been disclosed by the White House.
