New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing renewed calls from some Congressional Republicans for his denaturalization and deportation. These calls are based on allegations that he misrepresented his political affiliations and past statements on his 2018 citizenship application. Representatives Andy Ogles (R-TN) and Randy Fine (R-FL) have led the push, sending letters to the Department of Justice (DOJ) requesting an investigation into Mamdani’s path to citizenship.

Lawmakers allege Mamdani failed to disclose ties to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and past vocal support for the “Holy Land Five,” an group previously linked to Hamas.

Mayor Mamdani has dismissed these efforts as “political theater” and a “glimpse into what life is like for many Muslim New Yorkers”. He maintains that he has been a legal resident since age seven and followed all proper legal channels to become a citizen in 2018.
