John McCain promises a Saxby Chambliss "aye" on immigration

    By Daniel Malloy

WASHINGTON -- The landmark immigration reform bill made itthrough a Senate committee last night, and its key backers are hard at work wooing their colleagues before it hits the floor, as witnessed today by Georgia Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

Chambliss shared a ride on the subterranean train from Russell Senate Office Building to the Capitol with Arizona Republican Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake, members of the "Gang of Eight" who wrote the bill. As the trio arrived at the Capitol, I approached Chambliss and asked him his thoughts on the bill.

"Well now’s the time to look at it since it’s in its final form, and that’s what we’re doing," Chambliss said.

A couple steps in front of us, McCain turned around and said: "Put him down as a yes, an unequivocal yes."

Chambliss continued: "We need an immigration reform bill, and I hope my friends listen to me is all I can say."

He then got on an elevator with McCain and a couple others. Before the doors closed, McCain called out: "We always listen to him. We’ll do whatever he says, and it’ll be an aye vote. You can quote me."

In a separate exchange, Georgia Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson said he was waiting until the Judiciary Committee printed the bill with all its amendments so he could scour the whole thing. "I’m going to do my homework first," he said.

Chambliss is retiring soon. Don't forget that he also initially supported the 2007 amnesty.
