A Russian tech firm has filed a defamation suit against BuzzFeed News for publishing a dossier with unconfirmed accusations about ties between President Trump and the Kremlin.

The 35-page dossier, published last month, says tech company XBT played a role in the hacking of the Democratic Party during the presidential election.

The lawsuit alleges the dossier’s publication damaged XBT chief executive Aleksej Gubarev’s reputation. It labeled BuzzFeed’s decision to publish the document “perhaps one of the most reckless and irresponsible moments in modern ‘journalism.’ ”

BuzzFeed removed mention of XBT from the dossier after the suit was filed and apologized for including it.

The source behind the dossier of alleged compromising material, or “kompromat,” that the Russians allegedly hold on Trump was later identified as Christopher Steele, 52, a former British spy turned private intelligence businessman.
