Apparent Pipe Bomb Blast At Calif. High SchoolSAN MATEO, Calif (CBS) ―

An apparent pipe bomb exploded Monday morning inside Hillsdale High School in San Mateo but there were no injuries, according to authorities.

Lt. Mike Brunicardi of the San Mateo Police Dept. said the person believed responsible for setting off the explosive device was in police custody and being questioned.

Hillsdale High School is starting its second week of classes for the new school year. It has 1,200 students.

Brunicardi said the device was detonated at 8:07 a.m., shortly after police received reports from teachers about a student with a firearm on campus.

Students were evacuated to nearby Abbott Middle School, where parents were told they could pick them up.

Classes for the day at Hillsdale were cancelled, as members of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office bomb squad were searching the school to ensure there were no other explosives inside.

Gruesome scene avoided in high school bombing

SAN MATEO — A potential bloodbath at a Peninsula high school was thwarted Monday when teachers and a principal tackled and detained an armed former student after he detonated two pipe bombs on campus.

The 17-year-old San Mateo resident is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, prosecutors say, for his alleged role in the attack at Hillsdale High School, which involved 10 pipe bombs attached to a tactical vest, a 2-foot sword and a chain saw.

The Deputy District Attorney’s Office will consider trying the 17-year-old as an adult on charges that have yet to be filed, according to Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Wagstaffe said there’s no set formula for determining whether to try a 17-year-old in juvenile or adult court, but a key component considered in San Mateo is a suspect’s intent.

“How serious was he about intending to harm others?â€

Another article which names the suspect:

San Mateo Bomb Suspect ID'd; Home Raided

    (8/25/2009)

The 17-year old former student arrested for setting off two bombs at San Mateo's Hillsdale High School was identified late Monday as Alex Youshock, according to more than a half dozen of the suspect's neighbors, classmates and teachers interviewed by CBS 5.

Agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and local police searched the suspect's apartment on Casa de Campo Street in San Mateo on Monday evening.

They removed bags of evidence from the boy's apartment, including what San Mateo police Lt. Mike Brunicardi described as "bomb making materials."

Police said they were not naming the suspect because he is a minor.

14-year-old Moises Molina said officers asked him if he knew Youshock, and showed Moises a photo of the boy who lives in the apartment.

"I seen him getting arrested and yeah, that was him," said Molina.

Next door neighbor, April de Guzman, said she shared high school and middle classes with Youshock.

"He didn't talk much," Guzman said. "He was really quiet, didn't have that many friends. Kept to himself."

Earlier in the day, the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office said it was still determing the charges that the boy would face - and whether or not he would stand trial as an adult.

Meantime, Hillsdale High School was to remain closed on Tuesday because school officials said they needed additional time to repair the bomb damage.

I was thinking the same thing after reading about the the details.......that it's got all the hallmarks of a suicide bomber recruitment as opposed to what we've seen in the past with school attacks.
