    Bragging about Ethnic Heritage?

These days it seems everybody is bragging about their ethnic background, although this always should be taken lightheartly, because we're all americans, in any event its time to brag about mine.

    http://www.siliconglen.com/Scotland/11_24.html

    Compared to other immigrant groups?

Here's a good reference of how the Scots stack up against other ethnic groups. This is from an Associated Press newspaper article which appeared in 1980:

"Americans of Scottish descent tend to be better educated and have higher incomes than other European based ethnic groups, according to a new Census Bureau study.

"Based on a survey taken in late 1979, the study said Americans who traced their ancestry to Scotland had median family incomes of $20,018, highest of eight single ancestry groups studied.

"Second in family income were those of German background, at $17,531, while those of Spanish background had the lowest median income at $10,607.

"The Scots were the only group to record no illiteracy in the survey, had the lowest unemployment rate at 2.1%, and the highest rate of high school graduates, 81.2%.

"The study looked at characteristics of Americans of English, French, German, Irish, Italian, Polish, Scottish and Spanish descent.

"Among them, those of Spanish descent, 30.3% were most likely to have been born outside the United States. The Italians were a distant second at 13.1%, while only 2.7% of the Irish were born outside the United States.

"Scots recorded the highest proportion of married men, at 79.6%, followed by 75.5% for those of French extraction. The lowest male marriage rate was 62.8% among the Spanish.

Among women, the French were most likely to be wed, at 68.6%, with Germans second at 64.3%. Polish women were the least likely to be married, at 60.6%. The highest divorce rates were 4.8% among Irish men and 6.6% for Spanish women. At 3.5%, Polish men had the fewest divorces, as did Polish women at 4.3%.

Here are how the various groups fared statistically in some other social characteristics:

"Male high school graduates: Scottish, 81.2%; English, 74.6%; German, 72.4%; Irish, 68.8%; French, 67%; Polish, 64.4%; Italian, 62.7%; Spanish, 42.5%.

"Female high school graduates: Scottish, 78.1%; English, 76.7%; German, 72%; Irish, 70%; French, 65.7%; Italian, 60.4%; Polish, 59.1%; Spanish, 40.5%.

    "Unemployment: Scottish, 2.1%; German, 3.1%; English, 3.6%; Italian, 4.7%; Irish, 5%; Polish, 5.4%; French, 5.6%; Spanish, 9%.

    "Median family income: Scottish, $20.018 ; German, $17,531; Italian, $16,993; Polish, $16,977; English, $16,891; Irish, $16,092; French, $15,571; Spanish, $10,607"

So, you see, we Scots are the richest, best-educated, hardest-working and make the best lovers of all Americans. "Here's tae us! Wha's like us? Damn few, and their all deid! More's the pity."

Some minorities get PISSED when the WHITE, NON-Hispanic-European-descended American celebrates HIS heritage, but I am ONE of those Americans and ENJOY my heritage ANYWAY!

America is something to be envious of for sure. We can tell as not only are people always attempting to come here legally, but also illegally too. As well, it is apparent we are something quite incredible, look how other nations speak of our nation with obvious envy, when they attempt to downplay all that we are.

I will also share with you all something. This girl who has been hanging around our place, her family is from El Salvador. The situation she is in, to me, is quite bad, and dysfunctional. She told my daughter that she wanted to be Americans like us. Now mind you, she was born in L.A., and by birth is American, so I wondered what she meant and questioned my daughter further. She then said that this girl said like our family was all the time, Americans.

So trying to piece together this information from my sometimes clueless almost 11 year old, I felt what she was saying was she wanted to not be "ethnic" as she is currently living like, she just wants to be "American".

I felt it had to do with how hard the idea of being "Latino" is being pressed into the kids minds by their families, and it makes them feel like outsiders, even when they were born here, and they just want to be Americans, nothing more.

That made me feel proud that instead of her ethnicity being a factor, she just wanted to be an all American girl.

    Culturist reasoning

I am glad for your cultural group and your style of analysis.

The achievement gaps get regularly blamed on racism. People correctly rule out race making a difference. Then, since the multicultural establishment does not really believe culture is important, they incorrectly rule out cultural attributes.

This line of reasoning leaves them with the idea that society is racist. Of course, they can rarely find any particular evidence. So they look for hidden structural racism. Did you notice that teachers have, though hidden, lower expectations for minorities. They convey it in their eyes!

Culturists know that cultural attributes can easily explain gaps without reverting to talk of institutionalized racism or hidden racism. They know that the Scotts kick azz because the Scotts Kick A$$!!

More of this sort of cultural analysis could get folks to stop whining and actually start taking responsibility for their ethnic pride groups.

Wow, and yes, our Country with the different cultures in it, makes up America. But, when someone come here and want to live among us, they should go through the proper channels and do it the right way.
Instead the illegals especially the mexicans come here and DEMAND everything, hang our flag upside down, but, yet they are here in another country. They Demand we cater to them, because they are the special people and aferall the Europeans stoled their land. So now we Americans have to give our country to them, and cater to them, their every need and we have to pay out our azzzzes for it. They get everything, including we have to learn spanish to talk to them in our own Country, yet while they are the ones who broke the laws, by being here illegally.
we could never go to their Country, and demand everything, and that they have to learn english to talk to us, afterall we are in their Country and they owe us. We would never be catered to when going to another Country, if we snuck into another Country, we would be thrown in prison, and deported if we got that lucky, but, yet all the while the mexicans demand that we learn spanish to talk to them, afterall they are in my COUNTRY.

BS I will not learn spanish to talk to you, we have only room for one flag, the AMERICAN flag, one language, english, and if they dont like it leave.
    Proud to be an AMERICAN

Culturist, the thing that I find interesting, the older I get, that I realize more than not, although we are all Americans, we all have some differences, not just in looks, but so many other things.

Those of Irish descent may gladly agree that they are outspoken and happy-go-lucky people, those of German descent are serious minded and industrious, Americans of French descent (as in my families) are opinionated and not afraid to tell someone so, as well as great cooks ( ).

The list goes on, and no matter how long our families reside in this nation, there will always be these differences that stem from our ethnic backgrounds. This is what makes America so great though.
