Chicago: Rally for man taken by ICE at O'Hare airport, sanct

I don't remember reading about this. Can't verify the story -this is posted on the Chicago Day planning site. Certainly they are using this poor man's plight to rile up more marchers. One of our local activist told the May Day group that the minutemen were coming to our April school board meeting. They WERE NOT. They later posted that it wasn't verified after checking the facts -so don't go to the Wkgn meeting. Here is what is posted...

Latino Man Taken Into Custody by ICE

While Picking Up Family at Chicago O’Hare Airport

Chicago, Illinois - Thursday, April 24, 2008 Fernando Lara Flores was scheduled to pick up family members at O’Hare International Airport. The family was coming to celebrate his wedding on Saturday April 26, 2008. As he waited for his family his grandmother, Maria del Carmen Avila, 70 years old, was detained by US Customs Border Patrol Agents at O’Hare Airport. Fernando Lara Flores as any concerned Grandson went to the information desk to ask where his grandmother was…he was then asked for identification and taken into custody.

Arriving with the grandmother was Francisco Lara Avila, father of Fernando, who witnessed his son being taken into custody. Fernando Lara Flores has lived in the state of Illinois for over ten years. At the time of detention he was employed as a waiter at a Chicago restaurant. He also attended a community college for the past 8 years studying computer science. His friends and family describe him as conscientious, hardworking and law abiding resident.

Fernando mother Ms. Martha Flores stated, â€

"He also attended a community college for the past 8 years studying computer science."

Anybody else find something strange about that statement?

And let's not forget the other things that happen like the suppression of wages, that force us to take jobs at a payrate below poverty standards, or force us to do business at rates where the company bills get paid, but we're not able to pay decent wages or provide decent benefits for our work staff so you lose people faster than you can hire them.

I know, I paid my 2 techs around 15,000 last year, but by the time everything got paid, equiptment, materials, gas, taxes, and comp insurance, I made whopping 6500 bucks last year. That's right, 6,500, not 65,000 And that's divided up by 60 to 80 hours aweek. But I also abide by all the regulations, and rules too. Oh, and there's no vacation for me either. Unless you want to count the two weeks I stayed with my sister at the hospital before she passed away.

So if you have kids who like working on cars, steer them away from this industry, unless they going hungry.

Hmmm...........eight years and he still hasn't obtained an associate degree. I guess he's not as hardworking and conscientious as his "friends and family" would have us believe.

ICE doesn't take people into custody for no reason.

One of the following scenarios is likely at play here:

    1. He entered without Visa/Passport (if needed, in his particular circumstance)
    or
    2. He re-entered after having been deported
    or
    3. He entered with some problem with his person or belongings (carried too much cash, carrying drugs, etc.)
    or
    4. Was here previously and did something to spur a warrant or similar interest by a law enforcement organization
    (etc)

Yes, CPB is at the nation's airports. The story coughs up few precise details, but it sounds like this person was on an inbound international flight and his touching ground at O'Hare was his first contact in the US, and yes, most certainly you'd have to clear customs and yes, there are CPB agents that still do such thing... to the disgust of open borders advocates.

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

Agree Phred! ICE has to have very specific information to take action so I suspect that there is more here than meets the eye. Let them complain all they want! I you or I broke the law and were detained we would just have to suffer the consequences! I'm sure the ACLU would just sit on their hands rather than help a U.S. citizen
