Federal Government Closes AMBER Alert Website

Townhall is reporting that the government website for AMBER Alerts, a service dedicated to the safe recovery of missing children, has been closed during the shutdown.

The name is a reference to Amber Hagerman, who was abducted and murdered in 1996. Over 650 children have been safely recovered since the advent of the AMBER Alert system.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children:

AMBER Alerts are broadcast through radio, television, road signs and all available technology referred to as the AMBER Alert Secondary Distribution Program. These broadcasts let law enforcement use the eyes and ears of the public to help quickly locate an abducted child. The U.S. Department of Justice coordinates the AMBER Alert program on a national basis.

Well… not currently. Attempting to access amberalert.gov brings up an error message, saying that the website is no longer available due to a lapse in government funds.

The official Amber Alert page is www.amberalert.gov.

The Amber Alert is a national program that alerts the public when a child has been abducted. The Department of Justice broadcasts specific information about missing children so the public can be on the look out for the child and/or the abductor.

If you type www.amberalert.gov in your browser, you will find that the website redirects to an error message stating that the government shutdown has stopped the program. I am not linking it here because it redirects to an error message.


If you try and visit letsmove.gov, Michelle Obama's healthy child/exercise initiative, no such redirect takes place.

The official website of the AMBER Alert program has been taken offline, due to the federal government shutdown.

“Due to the lapse in federal funding, this Office of Justice Programs (OJP) website is unavailable,” a message greeting visitors now reads on the website.

It was immediately unclear when the website was taken down. However, it should be noted that First Lady Michelle Obama’s website for her “Let’s Move” campaign is still up, running and fully functional.

The AMBER Alert program is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement and broadcasters that issues urgent bulletins following cases of child abductions.

There’s a lodge along the Blue Ridge highway called, oddly enough, the Mt. Pigsah Inn The highway is open and traffic is heavy this time of year. The Lodge is booked solid for the entire month of October and it’s one of the few places along the highway grab a bite to eat.

The problem for the Inn is that it sits on National Park Service land and the driveway from the highway crosses NPS land. The driveway is never “manned” by Park Service Rangers. Until yesterday. Yesterday, because of the shutdown, the National Park Service posted two Rangers and barricades on the access to the Lodge and told the owner that “because of the government shutdown” his restaurant and Inn is closed for the duration.

Pay close attention at 0:50 when the chief ranger, Steve Stinnett tells us how “the federal government” has ordered this private business closed.

Property owners in Lake Mead evicted until government shutdown ends

People are being forced out of their own homes on Lake Mead and prevented from returning until the government shutdown ends because they sit on federal land, even though the homes are privately owned.

Much has happened since the shutdown began. On Thursday, an unarmed mother was killed by Capitol Police and it was revealed that the Pentagon spent $5.5 billion hours before the shutdown began. On Friday, a man set himself on fire on the National Mall.

Two senior citizens recently told local Las Vegas station KTNV that they were told by a park ranger that they had to leave their home within 24 hours and could not stay there again until a budget is passed.

Joyce Spencer, 77, and her husband Ralph, 80, told KNTV that they’re now forced to spend most of their time in the family ice cream store and with family nearby, since they’ve been prevented from going home.

Park officials told KNTV that Lake Mead property owners are only allowed to return to their home to retrieve belongings.


“Unfortunately overnight stays are not permitted until a budget is passed and the park can reopen,” officials said in a statement.

Spencer said that they have had to buy clothes that they left behind at their home and that the unexpected move from their home they’ve owned since the '70s was a lot to handle.

While KNTV notes that the properties on Lake Mead are “considered vacation homes; one of the lease requirements to own a plot is people must have an alternative residence,” the Spencers contend that it is still their property and they should be allowed in regardless of a shutdown.

On Saturday, the House passed a bill that will retroactively pay the some 800,000 furloughed federal workers when the government reopens.

However, as the shutdown enters its fifth day, the Chicago Tribune notes that there is “no end in sight.”
