    Americans against the wall??

Who are these people participating in this survey?

(CNN) -- Although a majority of Americans support increasing the number of Border Patrol agents along the U.S.-Mexico border, most do not support building a 700-mile fence along the border, according to a CNN poll released Wednesday.

Seventy-four percent of 1,013 poll respondents said they would be in favor of more U.S. agents along the border. But only 45 percent said they wanted a border fence built, according to the survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp. on behalf of CNN.

And while 58 percent said they would support large fines on employers who hire illegal immigrants, 54 percent said they would oppose jail terms for those employers.

More than two-thirds of poll respondents -- 67 percent -- said the number of illegal immigrants in the United States should be decreased. But only 34 percent said all illegal immigrants should be removed.

The numbers for the recent poll were roughly the same as a similar poll conducted in June.

The sampling error in the survey, conducted October 20-23, is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

you have to consider the source. CNN's polls always seem to be taken by people that lean to the left in political terms, or they are just answering what they think CNN wants to see/hear.

If you were to take the same questions and ask them on Fox, they would of course lean right for the same above reasons.

The fact doesnt change that most Americans want illegal immigration controlled. The sticking points are what to do with the ones that are here already.

I want illegal immigration reigned in, but I definitely don't want the wall.

First of all, the wall scheduled to be built is only half a wall. Why would anywone think foreigners would migrate to Mexico and be put off by half a wall to cross over??

Second of all, the wall will cost over 1 billion dollars in our tax dollars.

Third of all, the only reason the government is "giving in" and building the wall is because it will not affect businesses, who will still have access to illegal labor.

So, yeah, there are a lot of us who are sick and tired of illegal immigration but do NOT believe in a partial wall that is meant to placate the anti-illegal immigration lobby. The half wall is an amazingly idiotic barrier to a people who eat cactus for Pete's sake!

I can see your point of view, but the wall built on the San Diego
sector virtually stopped the crossings and pushed them to try farther
    East.

The half wall would be complemented by more agents and surveillance
methods. There are areas along the border that have
unforgiving terrain and would be very costly to have a fence there
and even more costly for someone to try to cross it.

    Alia,
I disagree, and we need the wall.
This is very cheap considering all the expenses accrued by illegals. Walls do work.
We cannot afford to go on w/ the way things are now.
There is nothing wrong w/ putting up a wall and securing our borders.

Granted the wall is only one variable in the entire equation, but a wall is necessary and is effective.

Isreal built their wall, and it decreased their suicide bombings by almost 90%.

I agree 100%. The fence is a step in the right direction. A 700-mile fence today could mean an additional 1000-mile fence tomorrow.

Question: Are Israeli businesses and everyday Israelis paying below-minimum-wages to Palestinians to come bomb their buses, schools and markets?

Question: Isn't Israel the size of New Jersey? How many New Jerseys does it take to span our border?

Question: Israel shoots suspicious Palestinians that fail to obey orders as they cross check-points. Israel also sends tanks into Palestinian cities to demolition buildings used as smuggling points and bombing. Are we ready to do the same to Mexican illegals and Mexican territory?

I've heard the Israeli analogy multiple times, but it is really not the same thing. The wall will not do for us what it did for the Israelis. So I disagree.

    Alia,

Respect your opinion, but when you ask the question about armed incursions (which is nothing more than an army or organization making an illegal armed entry into others soveirgn land), we should really look at this for a moment. Has there been reports of armed incursions into the USA by armed forces of Mexico? Drug runners? Does it really matter what uniform they wear? I think you'll find the answer to that one a "yes". If Americans wanted to take retaliation into their own hands because of our inept government, I can't blame them. Defending our homeland is one of our rights, right after the left give amnesty to all of the illegals (said tongue and cheek).

I also agree that the fence should be built, that 700 miles will lessen the load on the border patrol. Listen, we could employ anything to patrol the border, but the main problem is having the trained and qualified folks out there to affect an arrest and start the deportation process. If the government wants to deputize the Minute Man organization (never happen)and require them to have the same training as the border patrol...so be it! I am a volunteer in the community and there is nothing more satisfying than to volunteer. I might be a part time volunteer EMT, but I have to have the same training as my career counterpart. Maybe we as a people should stir things up a little????

I say if they can build interstates across mountain ranges, then they can build fences there too. This is just another excuse. If the will was there, it would get done.

    Been telling everyone for months.

Stay off the wall, stay off anchor baby.

If we cant win on our 80 percent issues why go to the 50 percent issues?

Congress floating this wall idea has played to our oppositions advantage by crafting the debate around one of our weaker points.
