    Sen. Sessions Update

Note this story posted today in the National Review Online about Sen. Sessions scheduled fundraiser with GWB this week. Some of us called Sen. Sessions's office last week to politely, respectfully express our concern and desire that the Senator be present to oppose S.1348 (as you know, Sen. Sessions has been a true hero in this fight against amnesty):

    Immigration Sessions [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

The timing for a President Bush trip to Alabama probably couldn't be worse. He's doing a fundraiser (planned...not in the last month!) for Jeff Sessions on Thursday. I imagine that puts the great senator in an awkward position this week.

It's, of course, liable to make news — just the presence of the the president in Sessions Country is fascinating and likely to mean some protests in some form from the Right — being organized, I gather, by the League of Christian Voters there. That's good inasmuch as it means more focus on this legislation and its details.

The bad news (besides the awkward factor) is Senator Sessions will have to be missing some of the Senate debate on amendments to appear with the amnesty legislation's leading proponent.

I just read some info on a protest they plan. As they say isn't it ironic that one of the greatest supporters and opponents of this bill will be in the same place...

Your help is needed to GET A MESSAGE TO THE PRESIDENT

Please send this e-mail to all conservatives in Alabama, south Mississippi, and the Florida panhandle. And please KEEP sending this until Thursday, June 21, 2007.

Your help is needed to get a message to President Bush, his advisers, and the national media. That message is: We are against the so-called immigration reform bill that will allow illegals to purchase legal status but do little to control the invasion at our borders.

President and Mrs. Bush are coming to Mobile, Alabama Thursday June 21. They are holding a fund-raiser for the re-election campaign of U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions.

Our strategy is to have dozens of sign-holders outside the event to be seen by the President's entourage and the national media. Since some of the sign-holders will be interviewed by reporters, it is important to have our positive 10-second talking points.

This is an ironic opportunity to show the nation where we stand in a positive way because Sen. Sessions is the leading opponent of the immigration sell-out and President Bush is its leading supporter. We can tell the nation that we support Sen. Sessions and oppose the President on this vital issue.

We need your help. Please prayerfully consider taking these actions:

    1. Come to Mobile, Alabama Thursday June 21 and hold a sign outside the event.
    2. Make a homemade sign and bring it with you.
    3. Put together a caravan of cars with others to do the same.
    4. Keep sending this e-mail to other concerned Americans.

The timing of this event is critical. The senate schedule could put the final debate on June 21 and the final vote on Friday June 22.

    Suggested wording for homemade signs:

Mr. President, please listen to Jeff Sessions
    BACK OFF on immigration sell-out

    Support Sessions
    STOP immigration sell-out

    YES to Sessions
    NO to amnesty

    Thanks, Jeff Sessions
    for opposing amnesty

    Our strong voice against amnesty
    JEFF SESSIONS

Please do not try to telephone as I am working this week to get two ladies into nursing homes while getting the word out about this project "Get a Message to the President."

Thank you for making a difference.

    Message to Sen Sessions,

Dump Bush appearance and replace with Sen Tancredo, your campaign manager will love you!

I hope the good folks of Alabama pull together and totally humiliate and embarrass President Bush while he's there! The man needs taught a little humility because I'm getting sick and tired of his aggressiveness, arrogance, and boastful attitude regarding the issue of illegal immigration!

re: Immigration Sessions [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

I suspect Senator Sessions will handle any awkwardness just fine. And a leadership aide points out: "we will only be on procedural motions this week, and won’t be on the bill or voting on amendments... he won’t miss any votes on the bill itself."

UPDATE: Leadership aide emphasizes to anyone liable to give Sessions grief or suggest the White House is "blackmailing" him on immigration: "Reid can’t file cloture on proceeding to the new bill until Wednesday at the earliest, that means the earliest there will be a cloture vote is FRIDAY, the day AFTER his absence."
