READ THE ICIRR WAUKEGAN KOOK NEWSLETTER

THIS IS WHY WE NEEK TO CALL WAUKEGAN TODAY!:

In Wake of Senate Failure, Advocates Stand Firm, Fight Local Anti-Immigrant Laws
An issue that won't go away incites fury in Waukegan

Despite the Senate's failure to move reform forward this session, the need for real solutions to our nation's broken immigration system will not disappear. Families remain separated by long backlogs, businesses still need workers to function, and would-be migrants are still dying on our borders. In addition, undocumented immigrants who are working hard, paying taxes, raising families, and contributing to our communities still have no chance to come out of the shadows and become full members of our nation.

The federal government bears responsibility for fixing our broken immigration laws, but in the absence of federal leadership, local governments are cobbling together initiatives that unduly target immigrants. From Arizona to Prince William County, Virginia, and from Carpentersville to Waukegan, local officials are proposing unworkable, punitive measures that play on the fears, stereotypes, and tensions that obscure the positive role that immigrants play in their communities and economies.

The City of Waukegan, Illinois, recently proposed an agreement that would allow local police officers to enforce federal immigration law. ICIRR is calling the measure, titled 287(g), a recipe for disaster. It is a non-solution that would result in a community rife with unbridled fear, unreported crime, and racial division. Read ICIRR's full statement.

ICIRR applaudes tenacious grassroots efforts to support Waukegan's immigrants, protest at town hall meetings (photo to right) and organize boycotts. ICIRR members from Waukegan and across Chicagoland will help facilitate a large-scale protest on Mon., July 16th to urge city officials revoke this disastrous measure.

It is clear that our work in the coming months is challenging but crucial. We must inform our community members about their rights, remain vigilant in the face of raids and local initiatives that unfairly target immigrants, and counteract the voices of hatred and fear that are polluting our public discourse. Finally, we must renew our hope while fighting for solutions to our broken laws, including bills like the DREAM Act for undocumented students and AgJOBS for agricultural workers.
