March 2, 2014 (CHICAGO) -- Four men were killed and five other people were hurt in shootings on the city's South and West sides since Saturday morning.

An 18-year-old man was shot and killed in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood early Sunday.

Deandre Baber was on the sidewalk in the 8000 block of South Elizabeth Street about 2:40 a.m. when someone fired shots from across the street, striking Baber in the head, authorities said.

Baber, of the 7300 block of South Winchester Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:58 a.m., according to a representative for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

A few hours earlier, a 29-year-old man was shot in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The man was walking with a friend in the 400 block of West 117th Street a few minutes after midnight when shots were fired, police said.

The man was shot in the head and chest and taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m., authorities said. His name was withheld early Sunday pending notification of family members. His friend was uninjured.

A 66-year-old man was killed after he was shot in the neck in what appeared to be a robbery attempt Saturday afternoon in the 2300 block of West 57th Street about 2 p.m., police said, citing preliminary information.

The man, whose name was not released early Sunday, was pronounced dead at 2:48 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

About two hours earlier, an 18-year-old man was fatally shot in the New City neighborhood on the South Side.

Michael Munoz was walking in the 1700 block of West 46th Street about 12:40 p.m. when a male shooter got out of a van and fired at him multiple times, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

The shooter then got back into the van, which drove away, police said. Police said the shooting appeared to be gang related.

Munoz, of the 6000 block of South Kolmar Avenue, was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 1:21 p.m., the medical examiner's office said.

At least five others have been wounded in shootings on the city's South and West sides since Saturday morning

Six D.C. residents — including a teenage boy, a young mother and two brothers — were killed within 36 hours in an unsettling uptick of violence in the District. The spate of slayings began Thursday evening with the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Jonathon Adams. It came to an end at 3 a.m. Saturday with the fatal shooting of 51-year-old Billy Andre Harris.

The deaths increase the number of killings this year to 25, a marked increase over the 12 homicides that were reported last year as of Feb. 28.

Thus far, police have made one arrest in the six slayings. On Friday afternoon, police arrested Jibril Abdul-Muwwakil, 24, and charged him with second-degree murder in connection with Mr. Adams‘ death.

A Metropolitan Police Department report states that the boy was stabbed in the throat at 4333 Halley Terrace in Southeast.Mr. Abdul-Muwwakil is scheduled for presentment in D.C. Superior Court on Monday afternoon. Also killed on Thursday was Tykia Dickerson, 19, of Southeast, who was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen outside of a sprawling apartment complex in the 3600 block of Jay Street Northeast around 8:30 p.m. Thursday night.

An identification in a police report says only that the suspect in the case is a male.

According to U.S. District Court records, Ms. Dickerson was one of seven parents seeking payment from the D.C. Public Schools after successful litigation of a case involving a child with special needs under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

The next slayings were of two brothers, 26-year-old Jason Bryant and 34-year-old Khalid Bryant, who were gunned down Friday night just outside a church in Northeast. On Sunday, parishioners leaving the Antioch Baptist Church in Deanwood, located just a few blocks from the apartment where the pair lived, said the brothers were not members of the church. But several stopped to look at a memorial of candles, flowers and liquor bottles left for the men on the curb where they were shot.

A police report said Jason Bryant had been shot in the head and the body and his older brother was also struck by gunfire multiple times.

In another case, 46-year-old Andre McIntyre was found beaten early Saturday. Emergency responders found Mr. McIntyre lying on a sidewalk in the 3700 block of D Street Southeast around 12:20 a.m.

He had suffered severe trauma to the back of his head, but was initially breathing when first responders arrived, a police report states.

But he died before he could be transported to the hospital. The fatal shooting of Mr. Harris occurred around 3 a.m. in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest.

Police were called to the 4800 block of 9th Street Northwest for a report of a shooting and found Mr. Harris on the ground in front of a home on that corner with a gunshot wound to the chest.

A woman who lived at the home declined to talk about the incident Sunday.
