Chinese rigs, crews arriving in western Colorado

    By GARY HARMON

    The Daily Sentinel

Some Chinese drill crew members already have arrived in western Colorado, preparing to start drilling for natural gas in the Piceance Basin.

An official with Denver-based Western Energy Advisors, which brokers arrangements for the Chinese crews and exploration and production companies, said he was unfamiliar with specific crews’ schedules, but that some crews and rigs could be expected to arrive in western Colorado now.

Several western Colorado residents on Wednesday reported seeing drill rigs arriving or being set up in the area.

Western Energy Advisors worked with federal agencies to arrange for visas for the Chinese crews, said Bill Croyle, a partner in Western Energy.

One hurdle the company had to clear was to show that the jobs couldn’t be done by American citizens or legal residents.

That wasn’t difficult to show, Croyle said, citing the loss of “a million domestic jobs among major oil companies over recent years, as well as reductions among smaller employers.

Much of the domestic exploration and production industry is “just gone, he said. Rigs have been trucked in from Canada and elsewhere for drilling in the United States.

Western Energy is working with the China National Petroleum Corp., he said., but a partner in the venture, Golden Bear Drilling and Services Corp., is entirely American owned. A subsidiary of China National, Jilin Petroleum USA of Denver, no longer has an interest in Golden Bear, he said.

One reason domestic exploration and production companies are attracted to Chinese crews is the background of the drillers, Croyle said.

“In China, drilling is a lifetime profession, he said.

The country has six petroleum universities, and many of the crew members hold master’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees or the equivalent of associate’s degrees, Croyle said.

Crew members must have at least two years of class work and a yearlong apprenticeship before they can join a crew.

Many crews stay together their entire careers, he said.

“These people know what they’re doing, Croyle said. “It’s all about the crews.

Over time, Chinese crew members will train Americans to work on the Chinese-made rigs, he said, and the number of Chinese workers will gradually shrink as Americans take over.

American workers still have plenty of work servicing drill rigs in the basin, he said.

And in any case, Croyle said, “The best Chinese food in the world will be at the commissary at the well site.

    JackSmith,

Good article, describing the grim reality of our current political landscape.

Even if the Chinese workers speak English, somehow I doubt the work will be transferred to American citizens... This is because companies import visa workers for the same basic reason that they import illegal immigrants, which is that they're cheaper.

The visas help to artificially lower the price of labor with the aid of various restrictions built into the visa... For instance, visas make it difficult to move from one job to another, in order to seek a higher pay... So, there may be an employer across the street who will pay more, but the worker can't go there to work.

Another way is by importing very experienced overseas workers while labelling them "entry-level" workers, so that the company is not required to pay them at a wage which is comparable to their skills... In other words, they import experienced workers and pay them entry-level wages.

I've read that companies save about 20% on work visas... That's a big savings, especially when you consider that 70% of business costs are due to labor... No wonder why they have such a difficult time finding qualified citizens, when they know they will have to pay citizens more... Yet, they always say, "well, we just can't find the workers, as much as we'd like to hire Americans first."
One hurdle the company had to clear was to show that the jobs couldn’t be done by American citizens or legal residents.

That wasn’t difficult to show, Croyle said, citing the loss of “a million domestic jobs among major oil companies over recent years, as well as reductions among smaller employers.
To me, this seems to be making the opposite case... I mean, if there have been recent job losses, then it seems there may be some qualified workers who could be enticed back into the industry if the wage was high enough.
One reason domestic exploration and production companies are attracted to Chinese crews is the background of the drillers, Croyle said.

The case is always made that foreign workers are better, regardless of whether it's so-called "undocumented workers", visa workers, or offshore workers.

Yet, these workers don't sound that impressive... The article says "many" have "degrees.".. How many don't have degrees?.. Also, some have the "the equivalent of associate's degree."

With our moribund job market that can barely wheeze-out 150 thousand jobs / month, I'm sure we can rake together some workers who would be qualified or could be trained in short order.

Yet, of course, the corporations can't say they're importing cheap labor while fully aware there are qualified Americans who would love to have the work, if paid fair compensation... That wouldn't fly with the public... So, they make the usual claim that they just can't find any Americans who are qualified at all, and the foreign workers are supremely intelligent or hard-working... And then they say, "see, it's not about cheap labor."
Western Energy Advisors worked with federal agencies to arrange for visas for the Chinese crews, said Bill Croyle, a partner in Western Energy.
It seems like corporations and our government work together a lot these days... It's clear we are ruled by a corporate-state partnership, dedicated to growing corporate profits, regardless of the impact to the citizenry... As part of this partnership, we are being sacrificed on the altar of globalism.

But the citizenry never asked for this sacrifice and we're suspicious how this is all for the greater good - i.e., helping a wealthy few get even wealthier... We will soon turn the tables and sacrifice the globalists on the altar of American democracy... They will scream as if being tossed into Hawaii's live volcanoes, but we will celebrate and dance, as power is returned to the people.

Through our hard efforts, we will unleash a swell of activism cultiminating in the 2006 elections, which will result in the replacement of the globalists with true patriots.

Their days are numbered... Our days are just ahead...

    Hooooorah!!!!

This is another way of undermining our nation and its national security .... just as we gave up ownership of the Panama Canal Zone and now a few years later China owns facilities on both ends and wants to buy the Suez Canal as well.
