    Cloaking racism with homeland security

Are you prepared for protestors or even race riots in front of your nursery?

Illegal aliens have become a heated topic and the anti-immigration movement is reaching a head. If we're not careful, things could get ugly.

Call me crazy, but what I see thinly veiled under a cloak of homeland security concerns is racism against Latinos. Many argue increased border security is needed to protect us from terrorists, but if you continue to listen to their arguments, their main concern seems to be an influx of Spanish-speaking individuals.

Heard of the Minuteman Project? In April this group organized protests in Arizona and volunteered to help the U.S. Border Patrol spot people illegally coming across the Mexican border. (All these vigilantes really did was get in agents' way and trip their sensors designed to help catch intruders.)

I'm not the first one to accuse the group of hidden racist motives. It talks of our country being, "devoured and plundered by the menace of tens of millions of invading illegal aliens," and says future generations will "inherit a tangle of rancorous, unassimilated, squabbling cultures."

It doesn't sound to me like the group's main concern is al-Qaida smuggling in weapons of mass destruction.

    It's everywhere

You hear the same rhetoric from mainstream journalists, too. A respected Dallas-area newspaper columnist and radio personality recently proposed a manhunt to round up the 11 million undocumented immigrants already in this country. He addressed the enormous cost of such a project by saying, "Don't ever tell me government doesn't have enough money."

He then proposed closing the borders to all but U.S. citizens and legal residents for, "a year. Six months. Whatever it takes." Never mind that this would shut down the agriculture and service industries.

He wrapped up his arguments by saying that immigrants of the past (his roots) were somehow better because they came to embrace our culture, history and language. Today's immigrants just come to send cash back across the border.

They come to the United States seeking opportunity and a chance to support their families? For shame.

    Be prepared

Growing up in Texas, I remember what the neighbors would call the employees of a nursery down the road. Let's just say it rhymes with "setbacks" and starts with a W.

In the last three decades, use of racial epithets has become less tolerated, and I'm happy to say I haven't heard that term in many years.

But is the heated border issue fanning the flames of racism (at least against Latinos) and making it more acceptable? And if people are willing to protest border patrol stations, will they target employers of Latinos next?

You bet. Minuteman Project leadership has already announced its next projects will be protesting businesses.

Believe me, members of anti-immigrant groups wouldn't care if your employees were U.S. natives, naturalized citizens or immigrants working in the United States under legal means. They'd see brown skin and label you and your company as evil and anti-American.

And if protests start taking place in front of nurseries and other agricultural businesses, are we prepared for it? Can we keep the peace or will violence erupt? How will you protect your loyal employees?

    Start preparing now.

This was my reply to Mr. Davis

    Dear Mr. Davis,

I have just finished reading your article in regards to racism.

First of all my name is Julie Marquez and I am married to a wonderful man from Mexican Heritage. (Third generation) All of my children are of Mexican heritage. I am saying this because I don’t want you to think I am racist when I say that I am in favor of securing our borders. And so is my husband. And so are a lot of people from Mexican heritage. Maybe there are some people who have joined these groups who are racist. I don’t know. But by blanketing all of these people as racist is just not fair.

The only racism I have seen are coming from the individuals who are protesting so vehemently against them. These individuals thought it was ok to call racist epithets to people from European decent? I have not heard one person call them racist. Racism is in all nationalities Mr. Davis. Believe me I have seen it.

These groups that you are calling racists that want to secure the borders have done nothing to earn this title. These people sat in a chair out in the dessert with binoculars, reported illegal crossings and notified the Border patrol. ???????? Why is everyone in such a lather over it? These people advocate legal entry into this country. I understand that these groups are going to Canada’s border next. What are we going to call them then? You can’t call them racists because isn’t Canada mostly of European descent?

To me these are Patriots that want to protect our country. American can no longer afford to support the rest of the World. We are slowly losing control of our nation and its happening right under our noses.

The people from Mexico who have assimilated into America’s society are not happy about illegal immigration any more than I am. It takes a lot to get into this country. I work with an individual who came from the Philippines to work and raise his family. It has taken him 10 years to finally become permanent. Not to mention it was very costly. It is a slap in the face of everyone who has crossed here legally when we condone illegal immigration. It’s not fair and it is hypocritical. We can’t let one race in this country without going through proper channels and tell another that they have to.

When you write articles like what I have read Mr. Davis, you are the one fanning the flame of racism.

    Way to Go!

    A wonderful letter, Julie!

The last line ought to give him pause for thought.....or at least we can hope so.

    Well done!

I'd like to ask this nitwit just how a country is supposed to make progress in homeland security without securing the borders first?

Call me crazy, but what I see thinly veiled under a cloak of homeland security concerns is racism against Latinos. Many argue increased border security is needed to protect us from terrorists, but if you continue to listen to their arguments, their main concern seems to be an influx of Spanish-speaking individuals.

Yeah, here is comes.....that dirty word used inappropriately again and again......trying to get all the mileage out of it they can. Do you even have a clue what the word 'illegal' means? YOU'RE CLUELESS!

Heard of the Minuteman Project? In April this group organized protests in Arizona and volunteered to help the U.S. Border Patrol spot people illegally coming across the Mexican border. (All these vigilantes really did was get in agents' way and trip their sensors designed to help catch intruders.)

These 'vigilantes' would not be needed if Washington (Bush) fulfilled his duties in protecting us legal citizens from the foreign invasion. I don't see any Demorats standing up calling for secure borders either.

I'm not the first one to accuse the group of hidden racist motives. It talks of our country being, "devoured and plundered by the menace of tens of millions of invading illegal aliens," and says future generations will "inherit a tangle of rancorous, unassimilated, squabbling cultures."

Funny, I've never heard of the Latino race? Am I the only one?

You bet. Minuteman Project leadership has already announced its next projects will be protesting businesses.

I wonder how many illegals are working for you?

I wonder how many illegals got their NC driver licenses renewed last week? President Bush needs to protect the borders not illegals. President Bush is a coward and guilty of treason when it comes to securing the borders.
