Capito tries to close loopholes in housing

Applicants would have to prove legal residency

It could be tougher for illegal immigrants to get federal housing assistance after Rep. Shelley Moore Capito successfully amended legislation Thursday dealing with Section 8 housing.

Capito, R-W.Va., offered an amendment during floor debate in the House of Representatives that would require all people applying for federal housing assistance through the Section 8 program to prove their legal residency by utilizing at least two forms of identification.

“Loopholes in current law, like this housing assistance loophole for illegal immigrants, act as a magnet and invite people to enter our country illegally,â€

Capito said that in 2006, in Denver, there was an estimated 20,000 illegal immigrants holding FHA insured loans.

Geez, how can we expect the federal government to remedy the illegal immigrant problem when they can't even keep their own house in order?

If our government would get on the stick and take everything away, the illegals would have no reason to stay here. Maybe somebody is finally getting a clue.

I am grateful too for this step but since some states are allowing illegals to get drivers license and the mexican embassies are issuing them passports that is two forms of ID. I am skeptical this will help very much.

Yeap my thought also.. Maryland is giving drivers licenses to anything.. Our Good Governor just added 1/2 million to the DMV budget for more Spanish speaking DMV employees..

What about the huge numbers that are buying HUD homes.

Two officials, in two different interviews at two different times, stated there were so many illegals who bought homes through HUD, if only a small percentage defaulted, the entire program would be in jeopardy.

This was probably 2 years ago - think how many more by now.

Boulder-Dash... When was the last time you saw a Federal Government Program fail do to lack of funding?? If all the illegals defaulted on the loans all that would happen is more money from the tax payers....

Hopefully they will default -- because that is the kind of thing we need to wake this country up.
